SCOR NA BPAISTI COUNTY FINALS

Kerry’s only representa­tive at the All Ireland Scor Sinsear finals will be the Churchill Quiz team; former three time All Ireland winners of this competitio­n which consists of Michael Gaynor, Paul Culloty, John Flaherty and Alex O Donnell who will be representi­ng the Kingdom at the All Ireland Finals of Trath Na gCeist on this Saturday April 13th in St. Gerards, College, Castlebar County Mayo. Going in as the reigning champions they have a strong tradition in quizes having competed in the first Scor final in 1971, when they were beaten by Ballygar of Galway by one point . The present team won back to back All Irelands in 2014 and 2015 and were beaten in their bid for a three in a row in the 2016 decider by Offally going down by a single point. Churchill coasted through this years County Finals with full marks and will be travelling to the Mayo venue full of confidence and to win their fourth All Ireland Trath Na gCeist Title in six years.

Scor within the County came to a conclusion with the’ Lee Strand’ Sponsored County Finals of Scor Na bPaisti revealed the Cultural talents of participat­ing Clubs before the presence of a bumper audience held in the Glenbeigh/ Glencar G A A Sports Hall on Saturday last. The variety of talent on show was exceptiona­l from; Dance, through to Song, Music and Drama which was preceeded by the Trath Na cGeist discpline. In all 250 plus children from around the County were involved. Certainly it proved once again the popularity of this National Schools Childrens competitio­n and those that got the nod on Saturday last were lucky as each category was hotly contested. Criostoir O Cillin, Oifigeach Cultura Chiarrai at the end of the competitio­ns thanked all our sponsors and especially’Lee Strand’ for their kind sponsorshi­p of Scor Na bPaisti; also mentioned were ‘Estuary Print’ Ballylongf­ord ( Sponsor of ‘Siobhain Cottor Memorial Shield ,donated by the Cottor family for the Overall Trophy in honour of the late Siobhain. ‘Trophy World’ Tralee/Estuary Print and Trophies ‘ Ballylongf­ord; sponsors for the Overall trophy the (‘Healy/Connor Perpetual Cup’) to the Club who had participat­ed most in Scor discplines over the duration of the competitio­ns, (Scor Sinsear, Scor Na nOg and Scor Na bPaisti). Special mention went to all the days participan­ts along with. the Adjudicato­rs, Ger Mangan on Sound and our hard working Scor Secretary, Suzanne Ni Laoire and everybody who helped on the day. He went on to thank the Glenbeigh/Glencar G A A Sports Hall Committee for hosting the days activities, all competitor­s who performed on stage for giving the huge and appreciati­ve audience with such an enjoyable evening; great credit due to them, their parents and tutors,

The day got off to an early start with the County Finals of the Quiz opening the days proceeding­s. 24 teams from around the County took part and at the end of a titanic battle it was a special day for Tralee club, Na Gaeil; (Ruadhan Clifford, Liam Cooper, Cillian Griffin, Ruari Hanafin) securing 1st place with 35 marks out of a possible 40. In joint second place just one point adrift were; Glenflesk, (Meave Darcy, Kate Healy, Beth Healy, Muireann Healy) and Tralee Parnells, (Oisin O Sullivan, Donnacha Buttimer, Brian Reidy)

Moving on we had the remainder of the days programme and in the Figure Dancing it was Dromid Pearces that scooped first place with Glenbeigh/Glenbeigh a close second. Next up we had the Solo Singing and Aoise Ni Dhonnchu , Glenflesk who got the adjudicato­rs nod while in second place it was Lilly Parker, Churchill. Moving on to the Recitation where Reenards Fiontan O Suilleabha­in was top of the pile and coming in at second spot was Saoirse Harkin, Cromane. The Ballad Group proved difficult to decide and when the Adjudicato­rs made their decision it was Glenflesk in first place with Keel as runners up. Sean Nos Dancing introduced with the last few years has been very popular with the audiences and this time around the honours went to Cara McCrohan, Reenard with North Kerrys St. Senans Allanah Moroney been edged out for second place. In Leiriu Tralee Parnels stole the show with a top class performanc­e while Reenard were not too far away coming in 2nd. The Crotto Club are renowned for their musical talents and once again they proved their worth in the Instrument­al Music discpline. Glenbeigh/Glencar finished in second place. In the final discpline of a great days entertaint­ment we had the Set Dancing and again very little between all four. However Kilcummin proved the top notchers on the day with Currow a close second.

It was a very successful day for the Reenard Club who also scooped the Siobhain Cottor Memorial Shield for the best overall club on the day

The (‘Healy/Connor Perpetual Cup’) to the Club who had participat­ed most in Scor discplines over the duration of the competitio­ns, (Scor Sinsear, Scor Na nOg and Scor Na bPaisti). We had joint winners with Dromid Pearses and Glenflesk sharing the honours.

Operation Manager, Jerry O Dwyer on behalf of the ‘Lee Strand’ Sponsored 2019 County Final along with Kerry Senior Footballer Graham O Sullivan presented the winners and runners up with their medals amid great scenes of excitement.
