The Kerryman (South Kerry Edition)

Learning on a new level at Loreto NS

- By SINEAD KELLEHER

AN informative guide to the institutions and people running the country has been compiled by students at Scoil Bhríde Loreto in Killarney and they have their fingers crossed that the wonderful publication will catch the eye of the judges in this year’s Junior Entrepreneur Programme (JEP) project.

The aim of the booklet aptly titled ‘Who Runs the Country’ is to provide people with a simple explanation of the most important people involved in governing the State. It explains the role of the Government, the Taoiseach, the Ministers, the President, County Councillors and many more.

The children became interested in compiling such a booklet following the Presidential election last October as many of them were wondering what the actual job of the President is. Having carried out some research, they realised that there are many misconceptions surrounding the Presidency in Ireland as well as the other offices and they came up with the idea of creating a useful booklet to explain who runs the country as their business idea for this year’s JEP.

As part of their research the class invited current office holders to visit the school and to provide information about their role.

The children in Loreto are no strangers to the Junior Entrepreneur Programme; last year they received the community champions award for their Tick kits, a kit to provide everything you need to remove a tick. They are also hoping that this year’s project will earn them accolades but more importantly they are hoping that the book will useful to young and old and explain who really is in charge. The booklet costs €5 and can be purchased by contacting the school on 064 6632484 or by emailing the school at sbloretons@eircom.net.
