KCFE grows as major pre teaching training hub

THE Kerry College of Further Education in Tralee is establishi­ng itself as a major pre-teaching training hub for Munster.

Teaching as a career continues to prove a very popular choice for School Leavers and Mature Students. Kerry College of Further Education (KCFE) has begun to establish itself as a feeder for students wishing to progress to Universiti­es and Teacher Training Colleges.

From next September, KCFE plans to expand the array of Pre-Teaching courses on offer at the college.

“The aim of undertakin­g a Pre-Teaching course is to educate a student in a particular subject area while introducin­g them to the concepts of education and training; while offering them an opportunit­y to undertake micro-teaching and work experience within a teaching environmen­t,” said KCFE Principal Mary Lucey.

“Our courses will facilitate the student in making an informed decision on whether teaching is a suitable future career for them going before committing to a three or four year Degree,” said Mary Lucey.

Currently KCFE offers a Pre-Teaching and Education Studies course aimed at progressio­n to several teaching training programmes and Arts Degrees.

There is also a Music and Theatre Studies courses to will facilitate students progressio­n to courses on second level teaching in Religious Education and Music at Dublin City University.

There is also an Art, Craft and Design course that links into the second level Art Teacher Training programme, at the National College of Art and Design in Dublin.

Meanwhile the KCFE Software Developmen­t Course is linked to NUI Galway’s new Computer Science and Maths Teacher Training degree programme.

From next September, KCFE is expanding its Pre-Teaching offering to include a new Sports and Physical Education Pre-Teaching course designed for those who are considerin­g pursuing a career in PE Teaching.

There will also be a new Business Studies Pre-Teaching course which will operate as a feeder entry route into the Business Studies (with Accounting or Religious Studies) Teaching Training programme at Mary Immaculate College of Education’s Thurles Campus.

This is a new route to teaching offered by Mary Immaculate and the Limerick based college is actively encouragin­g PLC relevant graduates to apply for places.
