Another busy weekend sees McCarthy and Murray triumph
ANOTHER fantastic weekend of Community Games action this weekend with Marathon, Model-Making and Tag Rugby and we look forward to Munster Finals in Tralee next weekend!
Marathon: Community Games 7KMarathon was held on Tuesday last in Currow with 14 athletes representing 11 areas participating. The Marathon is both a team and individual race at Nationals finals and the eight athletes who qualified in Currow will represent Kerry in May.
Results
Girls: 1st Shauna McCarthy (Milltown/Listry); 2nd Kerry Eager (Beaufort); 3rd Abbie Dunlop (Kenmare); 4th Alison Butler (Fossa). Boys: 1st Oisin Murray (Blennerville/Ballyard); 2nd Jack O’Leary (Rathmore/Gneeveguilla); 34d Cian Spillane (Milltown/Listry); 4th Gearoid Mulvihill (Listowel).
Model-Making
OUR County Finals of Model-making took place on Friday last at the Gaelscoil Castleisland hosted by Kenmare Community Games.
Ten areas participated and as usual in this competition the standard was very high making the judges’ job very difficult. Castlegregory, Kenmare, Listowel and Valentia Island have competitors qualified for the National Final in May. Special thanks to Gaelscoil for making its school available for our competition and to Kenmare for providing Supervisors.
Under 10
Boys: 1st Rian Marcham (Castlegregory); 2nd Emile Landron O’Connor (Kenmare); 3rd Leo Kelly (Castlegregory). Girls: 1st Jess Jackson (Castlegregory); 2nd Sarah Cahill (Kenmare); 3rd Niamh Loughnane (Ballydonoghue/Lisselton; 4th Nora Kelly (Castlegregory).
Under 12
Boys: 1st Liam MacGaghann (Valentia); 2nd Oisin O’Connor (Kenmare); 3rd Gasper Landron O’Connor (Kenmare); 4th Oisin Loughnane (Ballydonoghue/Lisselton); 4th Ruairi Daly (Kenmare). Girls: 1st Ellen Trant (Listowel); 2nd Katherine (Kate) McElligott (Kenmare); 3rd Anna Roberts (Castlegregory); 4th Saoirse Foley (Kenmare).
Under 14
Boys: 1st Christopher Palmer (Kenmare); 2nd David O’Connor (Kenmare); 3rd Cathal McSwiney (Kenmare); 4th Padraig O’Shea (Firies). Girls: 1st Katie Trant (Listowel); 2nd Aoibheann O’Connor (Kenmare); 3rd Yvonne Daly (Kenmare); 4th Mary Reidy (Lixnaw); 4th Molly Casey (Ballyheigue).
Tag Rugby
THE County Finals of Tag took place in the IT Tralee on Sunday – with rain holding off but weather cold and breezy.
Nine teams competed in the Under 11 competition and six teams in the Under 14 competition. Teams were evenly matched in both age groups requiring a number of games going to extra time to separate teams. Thanks to all competitors and to John Fox, Linda O’Reilly and all who assisted in the running of the competition.
In the Under 11 competition nine teams were divided into two groups with winners of the groups playing in the final and runners up playing for third and fourth placings. In Group 1, after 10 excellent games Beaufort claimed top place with four victories and the runners up were Spa Fenit/Barrow.
In Group 2, Kenmare qualified for the final with three wins and Listowel going into the play-off game with two wins. In the play-off game Listowel claimed the Bronze medals after extra time winning by 11 tries to 10 for Spa Fenit/Barrow who received the Pewter medals.
The final was very exciting with the game tied nine tries apiece at full time thus requiring extra time where Beaufort claimed the County title and Gold medals winning by 13 tries to 11 tries for Kenmare who received the Silver medals.
Result: 1st Beaufort; 2nd Kenmare; 3rd Listowel; 4th Spa Fenit Barrow.
In the Under 14 competition, six teams were divided into two groups of three. In Group 1, Spa Fenit/Barrow qualified for the final with victories over Listowel and Beaufort with Beaufort claiming the runners up place with victory over Listowel.
In Group 2, Ardfert/Kilmoyley won through to the final with victory over Kenmare and Duagh/Lyre and Kenmare saw off Duagh/Lyre for the play-off game. In the play off this game was still tied after extra time thus going to golden try with Kenmare coming out on top to claim the Bronze medals by 11 tries to 10 tries for Beaufort who received the Pewter medals.
In the final a brilliant display of running and passing as well as tagging by Spa Fenit/Barrow saw them win the County title and Gold medals by nine tries to four for Ardfert / Kilmoyley who received the Silver medals.
Result: 1st Spa Fenit Barrow; 2nd Ardfert/Kilmoyley; 3rd Kenmare; 4th Beaufort.
Both winning teams will now represent Kerry at the 2nd provincial finals on the first Saturday in July at IT Tralee
Munster Finals
THE first of the Munster Community Games Finals takes place in Tralee on next Saturday with IT Tralee being the headquarters.
