Cathaoirleach: ‘Kids, keep reading’
THE many children who took part in the 2019 Summer Stars reading programme in Killarney Library returned to the venue on Saturday to receive certificates for their summer achievements.
The youngsters were the toast of organiser Helen Joyce and Killarney Municipal District Cathaoirleach Michael Gleeson at the weekend, as the curtain was drawn on the latest running of the popular summer programme. Cllr Gleeson explained that each of the children in attendance read eight books over the course of the holidays.
The initiative has been available to children every summer since its inception, and the idea behind it is to keep children reading during the school holidays – which has proven beneficial when they return to their schools for the new academic year, Eamon Browne of Killarney Library has explained to
“There is a lot of research which shows that children who read over the summer months maintain their reading levels and return to school more prepared for the school year,” Mr Browne said.
“Reading also helps to develop creativity and the imagination.
“It’s a fun and calming activity that will improve concentration and communication skills.”
Cathaoirleach Cllr Michael Gleeson congratulated the children on their achievements and told The Kerryman that he thinks very highly of the programme.
“The children involved were young, some very young, aged from five up to maybe 10 or 11,” he said.
“I think it’s a wonderful programme, and I’d love to see it spread to more libraries around the country.
“With the pre-occupation with electronic gizmos, I think it’s more important than ever to get children reading and divert their attentions away from their screens, even if just for a little while each day.
“We’ve actively encouraged the children to continue reading as it is a wonderful pastime that can enrich their lives.”
