MUNSTER JUNIOR CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP QUARTER-FINAL Donoughmore 4-11 Kilcummin 1-5

KILCUMMIN venture in the Munster LGFA club championship campaign came to an end following a deserved win for Donoughmore of Cork in Rathmore on Saturday.

Conditions where not ideal for football with both sides having to deal with torrential rain throughout the game. Kilcummin went in as firm underdogs into this quarter fi nal and needed to get off to the perfect start to have any hope of getting anything from this fixture, they did just that with Eilish O’Leary finding the net following the throw in of the game. Donoughmore adapted better to the conditions thus in turn turning pocession into scores. They would outscore the Kerry side 2-8 to 0-2 for the rest of the first half.

Kilcummin scores coming from Ciara Kearney free and Debbie Murphy from play. Three points each from the boots of Rena and Aileen Buckley along with goals from Eimear O’Reilly and Rena Buckley. Rena’s goal a killer blow for Kilcummin as it arrived just before half time. Donoughmore where awarded a free that appeared to be going over to the bar but deceived the Kilcummin goalkeeper. It was a cruel blow to Kilcummin who were keeping within touching distance of the cork side but would trail by nine points at half time.

In a game with weather conditions becoming more difficult and limiting scoring opportunities it was to prove vital. Kilcummin needed to start the second half stronger but it was the cork side who carried on as they finished the first. Two goals and a point inside the first 10 minutes from Niamh Lohan and Aileen Buckley put the game out of reach from Kilcummin as conditions remained the same.

Kilcummin were rewarded for their efforts and persistence in the second half Ciara Kearney with two one from a free and a Eilish O’Leary point were the highlight of their exploits in the second half to the delight of their supporters whose support and enthusiasm never waned throughout.

While the result may not be a fair reflection of there efforts on Saturday they can be proud of what they have accomplished throughout the season considering they failed to field a senior team last year and can finish the season on a high by capturing the Division 3 League title next Sunday against Cromane.
