Legion make their point to claim Division 1 title against Glenflesk

EAST REGION COISTE NA NÓG DIVISION 1 FOOTBALL FINAL Killarney Legion 2-22 Glenflesk 3-12

PLAYED in ideal conditions at a well presented Listry GAA Grounds on Sunday, it was the town team that hit the ground running and built up an early lead.

Legion lead by 0-7 to 0-4 after 17 minutes, William Shine (3), Sam Benson (2) and one each from Conor Gammell and Jack O’Neill.

Glenflesk by response, had scores from Dylan Roche (2), Tommy Bowler and Michael Mullane.

Conor Gammell then hit a fantastic point off the outside of the boot from the wing, before William Shine scored two points, one a free and a huge effort from distance.

On the 20th minute Aaron O’Sullivan made a run from deep to finish a fine goal after a great Legion build-up.

Playing with high confidence Legion added four further points before half time from Jack O’Neill (2), Conor Gammell and a pointed free from William Shine to leave the half time score 1-14 to 0-5.

The second half began with William Shine driving through the Glenflesk defence to add a further point.

Tommy Bowler replied with a free for Glenflesk and midfielder Killian O’Sullivan added a point from play.

The sides then traded 5 points a piece, William Shine (2), Sam Benson (2) and Kian McCann while Glenflesk scores came from Dylan Roche (3) and Tommy Bowler (2).

Then the goals started to flow, firstly a fine goal from Legion’s impressive centre back Darragh Fleming who crashed a great goal to the net.

With the game going away from them Glenflesk rallied and managed to find the net three times in the closing stages.

Kevin Bowler held his nerve to dispatch two penalties to the same spot in the Legion net. In between the penalty kicks Darragh O’Connor also scored a well taken goal.

However the winners were able to see out the game with two points from William Shine and Sam Benson.

Killarney Legion had some outstandin­g performanc­es on the day, especially from the likes of William Shine, Darragh Fleming, Sam Benson and Ethan O’Neill.

Glenflesk had fine performanc­es from Killian O’Sullivan, Luke Crowley, Dylan Roche and Tommy Bowler.

This was a fine sporting and free flowing game with a huge amount of scores, great credit must go to both teams and their mentors on a fine sporting game played in a good spirit.

At the end of the game Seán O’Keeffe from East Region Coiste na nÓg presented winning captain Ethan O’Neill with the Division 1 Cup.
