SOUTH KERRY JFL FINAL St. Michaels/Foilmore 0-13 Reenard 0-6

ST. Michaels/Foilmore claimed their second piece of silverware in the space of eight days when they added the South Kerry Junior League title to the Cahill Cup following a seven-point victory over Reenard before a sizable crowd at Gortmore on Sunday.

For long stages of the opening half Reenard had the measure of the men in green and red, but some sharp shooting by Michael J. O’Driscoll proved crucial in seeing his side turn over 0-6 to 0-4 in front at the break.

O’Driscoll (2) and Sean O’Sullivan pointed Bally/Foilmore into an early two-point lead inside ten minutes. The controlled recycling of the ball in tricky offensive situations was the foundation of the early lead. Two Kevin Curran frees and a fisted effort by Conor O’Leary had the sides’ level on 18 minutes.

O’Driscoll (2) and Sean O’Sullivan restored the two-point lead for which Conor O’Leary had Reenard’s sole reply. Both defences were on top typified in O’Sullivan’s second score where he had to weave his way through a number of challenges before converting.

Nearing the end of the half Sean O’Connor sent a shot whizzing past the posts at the other end. One of the highlights of the half was Pa McGill’s splendid save from Bernard Kelly.

The introduction of Ronan Clifford to midfield at half time was the starting point of St. Michaels/Foilmore success. With Johnny Lane and Cian Goggin sound in the half back line the foundation for scores by Bernard Kelly (3), Alan Goggin and the attacking Cian Goggin put them seven points clear on 48 minutes.

The stonewall St. Michaels/Foilmore defence held Reenard at bay until Mark Sugrue pointed 22 minutes into the second half. Bernard Kelly and James Moran quickly responded for the winners with Eoghan McCrohan’s last minute free bringing an end to the scoring.

After the game, Pat Everett, on behalf of the South Kerry Board, presented the Jerry Egan Memorial Cup to Ciaran O’Shea, St. Michaels/Foilmore captain.
