FARRANFORE MAINE VALLEY ATHLETIC CLUB

COUNTY INTERMEDIATE & JUV. UNEVEN AGES

The second Cross Country Championship took place in Lissivigeen, Killarney on Sunday 6th Octobert. Conditions were ideal for the County Intermediate & Juvenile UnEven ages with clear skies and a wonderful backdrop of the Killarney mountain range. The first race of the morning was the ladies Intermediate & U19’s 4000m.

Well done to Siobhan Riordan & Catherine Riordan who represented our club and did very well. An Riocht AC made it a hat trick taking all three Intermediate positions. We had three athletes competing in the Intermediate Men’s 7000m race. All three ran well over the seven lap course with George McCarthy running a solid race to finish in second place behind the overall winner, Donal Leahy of Listowel AC. Dermot Dineen pulled away from a small group to finish strong taking the third place podium and Brendan Lynch finished in fifth place. The team of three were also winners of the team event. In the juveniles, Nathan Herlihy had a great run to come fourth in the U9 750m. Leah McCarthy, running out of age, in the U11 1500m did very well to finish in 8th place. In the U11 boys race we had eight competitors. Our individual medal winners were brothers Isaac & Ryan Vickers who finished in 2nd & 6th place respectively. With Kevin O’Shea 13th & Jack Doolan 18th they were second team winners.

The other team members who won bronze team were Tomas Lynch 19th, Peter Herlihy 21st, Evan Spillane 22nd & Jack Teahan 23rd. In the U13 Girls 2500m, Rhian McCarthy ran a great race to finish third overall, just behind was Mairead Walsh 5th and Laura Bradley was 18th. Unfortunately they were short one more for team prize. Tiarnan Lynch, out of age, won individual in the U13’s where he finished in 5th place. Also out of age in the U15 girls 3500m was Eabha McCarthy who had a great last lap passing more than three runners to finish in 4th place.

Sadhbh Teahan did very well also in what is a long distance for young athletes to finish in 10th place. The final race of the afternoon was the U17 Boys & Girls. Cian Spillane had a great solid run over the four laps to finish in second place. Shauna McCarthy had a very comfortable win in the girls race.

Shauna has won both age categories at county level for the past five years. A great achievement.

Next up is the County Senior, Junior and Juvenile 500m Relays XC (U10,U12, U14 & U16), next Sunady 13th October in Firies starting at 11am. This championship will be hosted by our club so it would be great to get a strong support for the juvenile relays and volunteers for helping out on the day.
