“You can’t f***ing tell me what to do,” Listowel man tells Gardaí”

- By TADHG EVANS

A 22-YEAR-OLD man told Gardaí “You can’t f***ing tell me what to do” when asked to leave a Listowel takeaway and had to be escorted by foot to the station after refusing to get into a Garda car following his arrest.

Alex Enright (22), of 40 Feale Drive, Listowel and of Apartment 2, 11 Market Street, Listowel, refused to leave Jumbo’s Restaurant when Gardaí asked him to do so in the early hours of July 14, 2019. They had been called to the restaurant by security staff.

Mr Enright refused to leave and became abusive towards Gardaí, the court heard. He was removed from the premises and was arrested. He then refused to get into a Garda car by stiffening up and had to be ‘frogmarched’ to the Garda station. He was charged with resisting a gardaí, failing to comply with garda directions and other public order offences.

The court heard that a summons had been served to Mr Enright, who has no previous convictions, on June 29 for unlawful possession of drugs at his apartment a 2, 11 Market Street, Listowel, on February 15, 2019.

Defence solicitor Pat Enright said his client “should have been maturer on the night”.

“He had been through a very sustained period of unemployment,” Mr Pat Enright said. “It manifested in all sorts of way.”

He explained that his client has since got a job in Limerick and “is doing very well”.

“It is hopefully onwards and upwards for him,” he said.

He asked Judge David Waters to take into consideration that his client had no previous convictions and that his resistance of Gardaí was “a lack of co-operation” and that he did not strike out. Judge David Waters ordered Alex Enright to pay €300 to the Garda Benevolent Trust Fund for the July incident and €200 to Cuan Mhuire, for the drugs matter.
