Siamsa Tire
Siamsa Tíre is the leading arts organisation in Kerry and home to the National Folk Theatre. Siamsa Tíre hosts a wide range of events, including touring drama, classical music, comedy, dance and opera along with productions by local groups, schools and musical societies.
Siamsa also trains young people in the traditional arts, and produce new work and tour. Meanwhile, Siams’a gallery spaces display the work of artists from Ireland and abroad as well as complementing the work of the National Folk Theatre.
Siamsa Tíre is also home to Free Radicals Youth Theatre. In developing the Greening Siamsa initiative, Siamsa staff took part in workshops and education sessions which explored issues such as climate change, energy, waste, and biodiversity.
Now, Green Teams focus on the different elements of the Greening Siamsa initiative. This is to ensure that everyone feels part of the overall approach to reducing environmental impacts.
Siamsa Tíre has reduced its environmental impacts across all of the following areas: Carbon Footprint: Oil fired heating replaced with air-to-heat pump, 40 PV panels, insulation, full LED lighting, energy efficiency systems (carbon footprint reduced by 40%).
Waste: recyling system, glass bottles, no once-off plastics, reduction in paper usage, composting green waste, resulted in a reduction of waste to landfill of 50% between 2017 and 2018. Biodiversity: No weedkiller used, lawns uncut until the end of April to facilitate pollinators, pollinator friendly pots, vegetable bed, biodiversity area, birdboxes etc Water: Water barrel for plant watering, Procurement: Support local green businesses, Manna, the Cheese Shop, Maura’s flowers. Siamsa Tíre has protected our folk heritage over many years; now, it’s also protecting our environment.
