Following some wayward shooting by both sides, Milltown/Castlemaine took the lead in the 6th minute with a Cathal Moriarty point and followed it up with a tap in goal for Eoin O’Brien. Rangers settled into the game from here though, and dominated the middle part of the first half. Pointed frees by Fiachra Clifford and Dáire Cleary sandwiched a Kieran Doona point to leave Milltown/Castlemaine leading by the minimum at 1-1 to 0-3 after fifteen minutes. Dáire Cleary (2) and John Tyther points put Rangers into the lead but Craig Counihan and Cathal Moriarty pointed to level matters. Rangers retook the lead with a goal – Fiachra Clifford with a super finish to the bottom corner – but Cathal Moriarty pointed a free for the hosts to see Rangers leading by 2 at the break. Half Time Score:- Milltown/Castlemaine 1-5, Laune Rangers 1-6. Jonathan O’Sullivan equalized with a point for Milltown before the hosts were presented with a giltedged chance when they were awarded a penalty. However, Jason Browne got down low to his right corner to save Craig Counihan’s effort. The home side added points from Eoin O’Brien and Jonathan O’Sullivan to lead by 1-8 to 16 with fifteen minutes to play. Fiachra Clifford scored a well taken point before forcing a save from Cormac Leane in the Milltown net, and the momentum swing was immediate as the hosts found the net at the opposite end through David Roche. The deficit was halved with points from Roan Moriarty and Fiachra Clifford but Pa Wrenn pointed to put a goal between the sides heading into injury time. Rangers laid siege to the Milltown goal in search of the leveller but the men in green had ‘parked the bus’ sufficiently to hold on for the win. UNDER 16 GIRLS: Laune Rangers Under 16 Girls season came to an end on Wednesday evening last with agonizing defeat in the East Kerry Championship ‘B’ Final. A late, late goal for the home side Kilcummin saw them steal the victory from Rangers following a mammoth effort from every player. Kilcummin got off to the perfect start with a goal from the opening play of the game, but Rangers soon settled. Points from Kate Moroney, Laura Leslie and Aoife Cleary levelled the game by the 9th minute. Sara Leslie cancelled out a Kilcummin point with one of her own before hitting the net for a goal to put Rangers ahead. With fifteen minutes played, Laune Rangers led by 1-4 to 1-1. Full back Jade Costello and centre-back Orla O’Brien began to gain superiority down the middle of the defence, which gave Rangers the platform to attack late in the half. Kilcummin pointed a free before Rangers scored their second goal through Nessa Healy. Kilcummin scored two more points before the break – the second coming after Lucy Cahill had stopped a certain goal with a great save – while Laura Leslie kicked the final score of the half. Half Time Score:- Kilcummin 1-4, Laune Rangers 2-5. Points were traded between the sides after the restart before Laura Leslie – the scorer of that early point – and Nessa Healy added to Rangers lead to leave Rangers ahead by 2-8 to 1-5 with a quarter to play. All the momentum had swung in favour of the home side though, and Rangers held on to their lead due to a huge defensive effort. The gap between the sides was reduced to 2 points as Kilcummin scored 1-1 in quick sucession, but Laura Leslie scored a brace to put Rangers 4 ahead with 8 minutes left. Two Kilcummin frees restored the two point margin as Rangers were now struggling to get the ball into the opposition half to relieve the pressure. With time up, Kilcummin scored the winning goal as Rangers – now out on their feet – were unable to get the all important equalizer. Full Time Score:- Kilcummin 3-8, Laune Rangers 2-10.
