NEW Wave Adventure Therapy (NWAT) offers individually tailored programmes of therapeutic intervention for young people and adults towards recovery and resilience. Adventure therapy is the prescriptive use of adventure activities for therapeutic opportunity and NWAT programmes can be considered an intensive outpatient service. Programmes are delivered exclusively on a one-to-one basis. New Wave’s programmes are grounded in professional social work practice and sessions takes place through outdoor adventure activities and in natural settings. Philip and Jasmin Stallard started New Wave Adventure Therapy two years ago after 10 years of developing the idea and laying down the foundations (training/ professional qualifications & relevant experience). Individually, they are motivated to make New Wave succeed in order to provide meaningful and tangible outcomes for their clients and are eager to create something progressive and innovative that paves the way for a change in how we look at and treat (mental) health in this country. NWAT have helped clients to achieve some phenomenal personal outcomes, including improved self-worth and self-efficacy, reduced self-harm and suicide ideation, (re) engagement with training/ education, and developing personalised toolkits for self-care, resilience and recovery. These outcomes follow through to the clients’ families and communities in far-reaching ways now and into the future. They have also provided a professional and creative option for health and social care teams in public services around Kerry to refer clients who have complex or acute needs. Meanwhile, they also showcase the amazing Kerry scenery and outdoor locations year-round and with ‘Leave No Trace’ principles. Philip and Jasmin believe that they are creating something new and special here in Kerry.
