THE Fish Box is a family run seafood bar in Dingle where the Flannery family not only serve up the freshest fish – they also catch the fish in their own trawler. For generation­s the Flannery family have been well known as a much respected fishing family and in the foodie mecca of Dingle it was, perhaps, only a matter of time before they transferre­d their fish from the trawler to the plate. This they have done with massive success, now employing ten staff in their hugely popular restaurant where, during the tourist season, eager eaters often have to queue up. Along the way, the Flannery family are trying to add full traceabili­ty to all their food, from tide to table, which in turn promotes sustainabi­lity, and sustainabl­e living through creating local employment. By adding added value to their fishing catch, it means they don’t need to spend so many days at sea each year, which is good for sustainabl­e fishing and good for the environmen­t. Mum Deirdre has 35 years experience as a top chef, dad Michael has 35 years experience at sea and now brothers Patrick and Micheál team up to bring fish from sea to plate, often within hours. This simple passion for fresh, healthy local produce, harvested in an environmen­tally friendly way, is passed on to their staff, who take pride in this unique offering and business model. Equally, the Flannery family are huge advocates of supporting other local businesses and, rooted in the community, have gone from start-up to outstandin­g success in a little over a year.
