The Kerryman (South Kerry Edition)
Me And The Moon, Tralee
TRALEE-BASED Me And The Moon (MATM) run art workshops and seasonal camps for children. MATM facilitate weekly workshops, seasonal camps and events not just locally but also nationwide. The workshops are led by fully qualified teachers, and they collaborate with a range of creatives and professional artists who specialise in particular fields. MATM’s workshop ethos is focused on Process Art, which puts the emphasis on the creative journey rather than the deliverable product. Children create work that is unique to themselves, rather than replicating a teacher’s sample. It is a therapeutic method of teaching, which really aids in developing confidence and individual creative thought and problem solving. At the core of the business is a small team (5) of excellent teachers who are also incredibly talented artists in their own right. The team work together in creating a curriculum that is unique to MATM. They also facilitate more specialised workshops, where teachers who are skilled in particular subjects – ceramics, cosyume design, for example - can take more ownership of their own workshop. A unique feature here is that the focus is entirely on the process, i.e. the journey the child goes on while creating – not simply ending up with something to show to parents. MATM have worked with Kerry County Council in providing free Process Art workshops in Tralee and Killarney, so that children from all backgrounds and social settings may have access to the service. Environmental impact and sustainability are core values of the business and they work with Recreate Ireland to source recycled and sustainable materials as part of their workshops.
