The Kerryman (South Kerry Edition)
Kerry musicans lead the nominations at Folk Awards
KERRY will be well represented in Vicar Street tomorrow night at the RTÉ Radio 1 Folk Awards 2019 with four Kerry musicians nominated in different categories.
Celebrating the second year of the dedicated folk awards to be held in Ireland, categories include Best Original Folk Track, Best Original Folk Track, Best Emerging Folk Act, Best Folk Instrumentalist, Best Traditional Folk Track, Best Folk Singer and Best Folk Group with a new category added this year for Best Folk Album.
Leading the nominations is Kerry artist ‘Junior Brother’ AKA his real name Ronan Kealy who has been nominated in two categories - ‘Best Emerging Folk Act’ and ‘Best Folk Album’ while other Kerry nominations this year include West
Kerry’s Gerry O’Beirne whose track ‘All Down the Day’ has been nominated in the ‘Best Original Folk Track’ album.
Other nominations with Kerry connections includes artist Inni K, described as a “quirky indie-folk artist” who, while originally from Kildare, is currently living in Dingle. Her track ‘Póirste Béil’ is nominated in the ‘Best Traditional Folk Track’ category.
Finally, Cormac Begley is solo bass, baritone, treble and piccolo concertina player from a West Kerry musical family; he has been nominated in the ‘Best Folk
Instrumentalist’ category.
John Creedon and Ruth Smith will once again present the awards ceremony on the night as RTÉ celebrates the significant contribution these musicians and bands have made to Irish culture. With many of those nominated performing on the night, this is certainly a night not to be missed.
The RTÉ Radio 1 Folk Awards will also be broadcast live on RTÉ Radio 1 on the night from 8pm. Highlights from the awards will be broadcast on RTÉ One on Saturday 26th October at 11.15pm.
