The kettle’s on, and Spa takes the battle to cancer

- By TADHG EVANS

IT WOULD seem the organisational skills at Spa GAA are top notch. On Tuesday evening last, the club handed over a cheque of €2,500 to the Killarney/South Kerry branch of the Irish Cancer Society – just days after holding a hugely successful coffee morning fund-raiser at the clubhouse.

On the morning itself, there was no shortage of can-do spirit in evidence, with people glad to chip in with some of their own home baking, a helping hand, and a lot of generously donated raffle prizes.

There was also far more to the event than just a coffee morning and raffle, club PRO Deirdre O’Sullivan D’Arcy explained.

“The idea was Elaine Moynihan’s originally,” she said. “She got the idea at a family day we held in September, and she thought the club house would be ideal for a coffee morning.

“We used all the space. We had the coffee morning in the main hall, and there was a room just off it that we set up as a kids’ play area.

“We had a TV set up in another room, too, for the rugby match. It was our first time running an event like this, and it went really well,” she added.

Cancer is something that has touched every community at some point or other, and Spa is no different, of course. So the support of sponsors, donors, and those who provided bake goods and raffle prizes was greatly appreciated by all involved.

“As I say, this was our first time hosting an event like this, and the response was phenomenal,” Elaine added.
