TEAM Tom McCarthy’s booked their place in the semi final of the women’s division one Hoola Hoops cup at the weekend when they took the win over U.L. Huskies. It was an away game for the St. Mary’s side who started strong hitting 24 points in the opening quarter to UL’s 15. Impressive opening performances came from Loretta Maher, Lorraine Scanlon, Cass Buckley and Emma Sherwood.

ST. Mary’s went on to take the second quarter by a basket to further increase their lead. Both sides were in foul trouble early in the quarter and much of the scores came from the free throw line. As the sides entered the third period of play Team Tom McCarthy’s led by 11. Huskies took the third by a point, again, much of their scores coming from the line. Summer King was strong for the Limerick side but was contained by Deirdre Geaney.

UL hit two threes in the final quarter to keep in touch but Lorraine Scanlon was strong inside for St. Mary’s and was accurate both under the boards and from the free throw line and once again the Castleisland side took the quarter and the win. TEAM TOM McCARTHY’S: Loretta Maher 19, Lorraine Scanlon 18, Emma Sherwood 8, Cassandra Buckley, Labhaoise Walmsley and Siofra O’Shea 5 each, Denise Dunlea 3, Miriam Leane and Maebh Barry 2 each.

Team Tom McCarthy’s will meet Portlaoise Panthers in the semifinal in January, while Ulster Elks and Trinity Meteors will contest the second semi-final.
