Big win for Killorglin on the road

MUNSTER JUNIOR LEAGUE DIVISION 3

-

Douglas 27 Killorglin 43

KILLORGLIN came away from Wilton with a winning bonus point after scoring six tries against Douglas Carrigaline.

The home side were first off the mark however, when Mark Hanley scored a converted try in the opening minutes of the game. This early set back actually served Killorglin well as it focused them on the task in hand.

A Luke O’Shea penalty narrowed the gap and 10 minutes later Killorglin put the Douglas scrum under severe pressure. After a series of carries, Fionn O’Shea touched down for an excellent try.

Luke O’Shea made no mistake with the difficult conversion, but Killorglin’s lead was short lived as Pádraig McSweeney replied with a penalty for Douglas to level the game at 10-10.

It was from here on that Killorglin laid the foundations for victory. Rob Lynch barged over for a try off the back of a five-metre scrum.

Soon afterwards Tiarnan Clifford made a powerful break and as the ball was spread wide Darragh O’Shea scorched under the posts for a great team try.

O’Shea repeated the feat moments later to secure Killorglin’s bonus point. Douglas replied with a penalty from McSweeney, but Killorglin took a handsome 29-13 lead in at the half-time break.

Killorglin secured their fifth try after 10 minutes of the second half when some good work from Mike Breen and Darragh O’Shea led to a touch down from Kevin Courtney. Killorglin were then reduced to 14 men when one of their players received a yellow card and Douglas took advantage with a try from Dave McCarthy.

Killorglin responded well, and Shane

O’Neill scored their 6th try. The standard of the game deteriorated thereafter with yellow cards dished out to both sides, but Killorglin had done enough to take the win.

Killorglin have now opened a four-point gap at the top of Division 3 and are well on course for promotion.

They face a tough local derby next Sunday when they face local rivals Killarney at home.

Killarney 28 Youghal 7

KILLARNEY welcomed struggling Youghal to Aghadoe and earned a bonus point victory to keep their promotion ambitions alive.

Shane McSweeney may be better known as a GAA player with Kilcummin, but he showed his prowess on the rugby field with two tries for Killarney. Ger Moynihan chipped in with a try also and the bonus point was secured when Killarney were awarded a penalty try.

Paudie Sheehan was on form with the boot and converted the three tries. Killarney are away to local rivals Killorglin next Sunday and nothing but a win will suffice if they are to entertain any hopes of gaining promotion to Division 2.

Corca Dhuibhne 17 Scariff 28

CORCA Dhuibhne put up a fine battle before eventually succumbing to high flying Scariff last Sunday. Bill Murphy scored two tries for the Clare side and Evan McMahon and Cathal Noonan got one each.

Jason Monaghan kicked a conversion and two penalties. Adam Daly, Brian Murphy and Kevin Moriarty replied with tries for Corca Dhuibhne and Alan Devane kicked a conversion.

Corca Dhuibhne are away to fellow strugglers Youghal next Sunday.
