Another hugely successful night of ‘Gift Giving’ ...

-

THE concept of ‘gift giving’ is part and parcel of Christmas time but the annual ‘Gift Giving’ event in Kenmare – now in its third year – puts a more wholesome emphasis on the people who are less well off at Christmas time. There is no expiry date on generosity, yet Christmas is a time when the need to be generous is that bit more acute.

That’s why four women from Kenmare decided some years ago, after seeing the devastation caused by flooding in Cork City, to establish a night of ‘Gift Giving’ for local and national charities. It coincides with the turning on of the Christmas lights in Kenmare, which took place on Saturday last.

For organisers Christine Bras, Mags Mahony, Lynne Brennan and Lorraine Griffin it’s been a fruitful adventure thus far as people’s generosity and support of ‘Gift Giving’ night continues to exceed their expectations. The 2019 recipients were the Simon Community/Focus Ireland Kerry branches and Kenmare St Vincent de Paul. The organisers felt it was important for children to understand the concept of showing empathy.

“Even though turning on the Christmas lights in Kenmare is always a happy occasion, our event teaches children the importance of giving back to people less fortunate than themselves, it’s educational in many ways,” said Lorraine Griffin.

Lorraine also praised the generosity of local people. “We are so lucky and this year was no exception when it comes to generosity. We get so many food parcels and new clothing, as well as money. Even the local school children handmade their own Christmas cards to include them with the gifts. We had a huge response this year and I want to thank everyone that donated and helped us again. Without them we wouldn’t be able to do it,” said Lorraine.
