Wren helps keep Cancer Care buses on the road

-

MEMBERS of the Green & Gold Wren helped ‘keep the buses on the road’ when they donated €2,000 to the Kerry Cancer Support Group at their wren ball in O’Flaherty’s bar on Friday night.

The money was collected by the Green & Gold around the streets of Dingle on what many participants reckon to have been one of the best Wren’s Days ever, despite the wet and windy weather. All of the town’s four wrens had a very big turnout, there was a ‘nice’ number – but not too many – interested onlookers on the streets and the collection boxes were well supported. There was a notable absence of coach-borne young revellers around the town and in the evening, the streets were quiet and the wrens were able to follow the call of tradition without fear of attracting riotous crowds of over-excited and under-dressed teenagers.

At the wren balls since then the Sráid Eoin Wren donated €700 to West Kerry Care of the Aged and €300 to the Dingle Camphill Community; the Quay Wren donated €1,700 to the RNLI, and on Friday night the Green & Gold donated €2,000 to the Kerry Cancer Support Group. The

Goat Street Wren will hold their ball this weekend when they will follow up with another donation to charity.

Breda Dyland of the Kerry Cancer Support Group told the Green & Gold members in O’Flaherty’s that: “You going out on the Wren’s Day collecting money is what keeps our buses on the road,” adding that, “nobody will face their cancer journey alone while we’re around”. Over the past 10 years the group has transported 2,500 patients to 23,000 appointments for cancer treatment in hospitals in Cork and Limerick.
