Bronze for McCarthy at AIT

THE Indoor athletic season is well underway and Kerry athletes are back on the podiums winning medals at various events.

Last Saturday saw the Irish Life Health National Indoor Combined Events take place in Athlone’s AIT Indoor Stadium. Derek McCarthy of St Brendan’s brought home a bronze medal in the O-40 age group with a point tally of 2117.

On Sunday the Munster Indoor Inter-club Indoor Relays & some U17-19 field events took place in Nenagh.

Lois Tuathail AC were excellent in the relays taking the following honours: Boys U-11, 2nd Shane Mason, Eoin Cuddigan, Alex Collins,

Thomas Scanlon; Boys U-12, 3rd Steve Reidy, Thomas Cahill, Sean Mulvihill, Joseph McElligott; Boys U-14, 3rd John Carmody, Georgie O’Donnell, Mark McElligott, Dylan O’Callaghan; Girls U-14, 3rd Emma Neylon, Saoirse Dillon, Mollie O’Riordan, Eimear Buckley,

In the field events Tralee Harriers’ Kirby Anne Ryan brought home her second medal of the indoors with a gold in the U-17 shot putt with a throw of 11.36m.

Celtic Nations Cross-country

Kerry athletics congratula­tes Niamh O’Mahony An Riocht who represente­d Ireland at the Celtic Nations Cross-country in Sterling Scotland on the previous weekend. Niamh competed in the Junior U-20 event. In tough conditions she finished 15th overall and was the second Irish athlete through the finish line in a time of 0.29.14, earning Ireland a bronze medal.

O’Mahony continues to rack up the miles and the medals and will be honoured at the upcoming Munster Star awards. We in Kerry athletics look forward to seeing what this young woman will achieve in 2020.

Kerry Athletic County Developmen­t Squads

The squad sessions are underway most Sundays 10.30am to 12.30pm. Next session is Sunday 26th at the An Riocht Track in Castleisla­nd. These sessions are open to all 2020 registered Kerry athletics club members ages U13 and older.
