Future stars showcased at Glenbeigh

- HANDBALL NOTES Con Dennehy

THE future stars of Kerry handball showcased their skills when the Glenbeigh Handball Complex hosted the Kerry Juvenile Handball Championships.

An impressive and exciting programme of championship games were played last Saturday under championship director and former World Handball medal winner John Joe Quirke (Glenbeigh). It was a memorable day for Glenbeigh player Maggie Quirke who won the Under 12 Singles title and later partnered with Oliver Mason (Ballymacelligott) to win the Doubles championship.

The most exciting game on the programme was the Boys Under 12 Singles final between Allyn O’Shea (Lispole) and Ryse Murphy (Glenbeigh). O’Shea won the opening game 11-10 with Murphy winning the second game by a single point, 10-11. In a pulsating final game O’Shea, a very talented young player, edged out his opponent to win 11-5.

Ryse Murphy was also in action in an energy sapping Boys Under 12 Doubles final that saw Liam O’Connor (Glenbeigh) and Aidan Sheahan (Glenbeigh) defeat Murphy and Allyn O’Shea (Lispole) 11-10, 10-11 and 11-7.

“While this was the first championship event of 2020 we were delighted with the exceptional skills and the determination showcased by all the juvenile players. The future of Kerry handball is in safe hands and it’s up to all of us to ensure the skills highlighted at the Juvenile championships are maintained, encouraged and fostered in our clubs across Kerry,” said Christy Moriarty, chairman of the Kerry Handball Board.
