Siamsa Tíre to host fantastic ‘Trad Connections’

-

AN exciting new series of traditional Irish music performances will begin on January 31 in the intimate surroundings of the foyer at Siamsa Tíre.

The aim of the series is to create a forum for well known and upcoming traditional artists from around the country to perform in an intimate setting on the last Friday of every month.

The first in the series will present one of Ireland’s finest accordion players Danny O’Mahony, currently Traditional Artist in residence at UCC.

Imaginative and fearless in his interpretation, Danny’s musical style is expressive and deeply personal. His passionate engagement with the traditions of his native area of Kerry is embodied in his own creative practice and style which has brought him national and international acclaim.

O’Mahony has a keen interest in regional styles and historical accordion practices that is integral to his own performance and creative exploration of musical traditions. An experienced broadcaster, Danny presents and produces a popular weekly radio programme on Radio Kerry featuring Irish Traditional Music and Song entitled Trip to the Cottage, which began in 2004.

The second in the series will present multi-award winning Sligo-based trio Leonard Barry (native of Kilmoyley), Declan Folan and Shane McGowan. They released their new album ‘Hurry the Jug’ in 2019 and will include a selection of tunes from their album on the night as well as music from their extensive repertoire.

The third performance will present up and coming traditional band The Rising which was formed in 2016.

This 4 piece band consists of guitar, button accordion, fiddle and percussion, vocals and unique Irish dance and their aim is to ‘change the world of trad, one lively tune at a time’.

They have toured nationwide and internationally together and individually and closed out the Friday night of Fleadh Cheoil na hEireann gig for the last four years.

The fourth performance of this season will be from Noel McAuliffe and Leonard Casey – no strangers to Siamsa Tíre and local audiences.

Trad Connections will continue throughout the summer months with exciting guest musicians to be announced ahead of the season! Enjoy the best of traditional music, new and old, at Siamsa Tíre for only €5.
