The Kerryman (South Kerry Edition)
Coláiste students ready to shake up the stage
IT’S ALMOST show-time!
The Transition Year students at Coláiste na Sceilge have been hard at work ahead of the 2020 school musical, which will take Cahersiveen and its environs by storm over the next three nights.
After last year’s TY students captured the imagination with ‘The Dancing Queen’, bringing the music of ABBA to audiences, this year’s students are all set to put weeks and months of preparation into practice with ‘Let’s Get All Shook Up’.
Where ABBA provided the musical inspiration last year, the 2020 students will be providing their take on the hits of Elvis.
“There are 72 TY students involved, between on-stage, backstage, lights, props, artwork, raffle, and shop,” Shane O’Neill of Coláiste na Sceilge told The Kerryman of his Transition Year charges.
“It tells the all-new story of a square little town in the middle of a square state, in the middle of a square decade, where a lonely young girl dreams of hitting the open road.”
Into her life steps a guitar-playing roustabout, and what ensues is a musical treat combining the songs of the ever-iconic Mr Presley with a newly crafted storyline.
“The TY class of 2019-20 have been busy rehearsing since October,” Shane said, explaining that choreographer
Jackie O’Mahony and musical director Martin Hurley have played no small part during that time.
The performances begin at the school tomorrow night (Thursday, January 30) at 8pm, with further 8pm performances on January 31 and February 1.
Tickets cost €12 for adults and €10 for students and OAPs.
These tickets are available at the school itself during lunchtimes, as well as being available at Quirke’s Newsagents, Cahersiveen.
