The Kerryman (South Kerry Edition)
Academics and stars to address the major issues in Gaelic games
THE GAA is today facing more scrutiny than ever been before, not least when it comes to training loads; the demands of juggling sport with a career; and competitive balance.
With that in mind, the second-annual Skellig CRI Workshop in Sports Economics – which takes place this Friday (February 21) in Cahersiveen Library – looks set to be a very timely offering.
The free event, chaired by UCC’s Dr John Eakins, opens at 4.25pm, and all the above matters and more will be discussed by a stellar line-up of guest presenters.
Dr John Considine (UCC), a former Cork senior hurler and minor manager; Waterford senior hurler Noel Connors (WIT); and Kerry’s own senior football star and Templenoe man Gavin Crowley (IT Tralee) will be among those speaking on the night. Dr Robert Butler (UCC) will open the workshop – which Skellig CRI is holding in conjunction with the Centre for Sports Economics and Law; and Cork University Business School – and he will also close the event with a talk on the evolution of broadcasting in GAA circles.
Also included on the list of speakers is Dr Elish Kelly of the
Economic and Social Research Unit, who will examine the education and professional career decisions of senior inter-county players, and how to safeguard amateur athletes. The workshop will last roughly two hours, and while attendance is free, registration is required at Eventbrite beforehand at www.eventbrite.ie/e/2nd-skelligcri-sports-economics-workshop-tickets-91779217109.
