Hoop stars set to shine in Currow in basketball blitz

IT may be one of the smallest sports clubs in Kerry but for the players, coaches and parents at St. Bridget’s Basketball in Currow, its has one of the largest sporting hearts in the County.

This weekend it will be celebration time in the picturesque village as the club hosts their 30th annual Parish Basketball Blitz.

Friendships will be put on hold as more that 100 children from 1st Class to 6th Class battle it out on the basketball court on Saturday and Sunday to win a coveted title for their team.

Thirty teams are taking part in the event which takes place in Killeentierna Community Centre.

“This is the highlight of the year for all the players, their coaches and family. It’s a fun filled weekend that ensures lasting memories for many years,” said chairman of St Bridget’s Basketball club, Con Dennehy.

“One of the highlights of the weekend is the Martha Boyle Memorial Tournament for the 5th and 6th Class girl’s teams. Martha passed away in 2002 and is very fondly remembered in the club as a wonderful player and an all round lovely young girl. We are honoured to keep her memory alive for current and future players,” added Con.

A hard working and dedicated club committee are busy organising the blitz which has been an integral part of the club since it was established in 1989 and are looking forward to another great weekend.

“One change to our programme this year will see the traditional MVP Awards discontinued and replaced by a special minted medal, The Spirit of the Blitz, presented during the six finals.

It is a weekend for the young players and an opportunity for them to shine on the court.”
