O’Connor concerns over final round of Division 2A

- BY DAMIAN STACK

KERRY senior hurling manager Fintan O’Connor has expressed his concern that the Division 2A match between Offaly and Antrim, which was called off last weekend due to the effects of Storm Dennis, may be played after the final round of league games takes place.

There’s no gap into which the game between Offaly and Antrim – fixed for Tullamore – can be played before the final round of games and, indeed, before the league final which was due to take place on March 8. It’s expected that the league final will go back at least a week to the weekend of March 14/15.

“I don’t know what the GAA are going to do because the last round of the league games should all be played at the same time, because Antrim and Offaly if their game, which was off, goes to the last round of the league and it’s played after it gives them a bit of an unfair advantage, but I don’t know are they going to play that next week and put the last week on the week after.

“I don’t know what’s going to happen like. I presume all the last round games would be on the same weekend, that would make sense. It wouldn’t be right otherwise,” O’Connor told The Kerryman on Tuesday morning.

County Board Chairman, Tim Murphy, said on Tuesday evening that he expected to hear from the CCCC on the matter before the end of the week.

“We would expect to hear something on that before the end of the week alright, but as of now we’ve heard nothing,” he told The Kerryman.

Mr Murphy echoed O’Connor’s view that the game should be played before the final round of games take place.

“In an ideal world you’d probably prefer it that way, but we’ll know more towards the end of the week alright,” he said.
