Lynch loses All-Ireland 40x20 quarter-final

- Con Dennehy

BRAVERY in sport, at times, fails to reap rewards, and this was illustrated in Mayo at the weekend during the 40x20 Irish Nationals handball championships.

Competing in the Men’s Open Singles on Saturday, Dominick Lynch (Glenbeigh) beat Paul Moran (Kildare) 15-8 and 15-7 to advance to the quarter-finals of this prestigious event that attracts the top players in Ireland. Lynch then took on Diarmuid Nash (Clare), ranked No.1 in Ireland at the moment, in a titanic, frantic and energy sapping clash. Classed as the best game of the championships, Lynch went down 15-13 and 15-9.

“This game had everything from long rallies to great kills and astonishing serves,” Kerry Handball PRO Jack O’Shea said. “Dominick took a 4-0 early lead and scores were tight with both players level past the midway stage, 10-10. Despite great play from Dominick,

Nash won the first game. The second game was level on a number of occasions but Nash finished it out 15-9. A great performance from Dominick.”

EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIPS

KERRY will be represented in Round 2 of the European 1 Wall Championships on Saturday and Sunday when three players from Glenbeigh Handball Club travel to London for the event. John Joe Quirke and Dominick Lynch will compete in the Masters Single and Doubles event with Jack O’Shea taking part in the Open Single and Doubles event.

MUNSTER CUMANN NA mBUNSCOL

DESPITE the perils of Storm Denis, a sports star from a school in Mid Kerry was top of the class at the weekend with silver medal success at the Munster 40x20 Cumann na mBunscol Handball championships.

Kerry were represented at these prestigious championships, played Tipperary on Sunday, by handballers from Glenbeigh National School and Curraheen National School. Primary Schools from all over Munster vied for titles in the U-11 and U-13 Singles and Doubles championships.

The only Kerry medal winner was Lucas Riordan (pictured left) from Curraheen National School. He returned to Kerry with a silver medal he won in the Under-13 Singles final.
