Storm Dennis fails to dampen drama of Division 2 and 3 Plate Finals

WHILE Storm Dennis was raging outside the temperatur­e inside the Tralee Sports Complex was much higher as the teams in the Kerry Airport KABB Division 3 on Saturday and the Division 2 Plate finals on Sunday lit up the hall with some splendid action.

BRENDAN’S LOWER FALCONS FOR OPENING WIN

THE first game of the weekend was the U-16 Boys Division 3 Plate final where St Brendan’s defeated Glenbeigh Falcons 60-40. The Tralee side led from the start.

VIXENS OVERCOME KESTRELS IN GIRLS PLATE

THE Girls Division 3 Plate final saw TK Vixens taking the silverware in a 48-43 point win over Kenmare Kestrels. Vixens were 17 up after a dominant first quarter. The Kestrels fought back in the second to trail 24-15 at the break but the Vixens gap was too big.

VIXENS ON THE DOUBLE WITH U-14 BOYS WIN

THE Vixens U-14 Boys made it a double for the club with a 54-20 point win over Rathmore Ravens. Rathmore never gave up and a huge three Mathew Kennedy but in the end the North Kerry side took home the trophy.

WILDCATS ROAR TO U-12 BOYS PLATE WIN

THE strength of North Kerry basketball was again shown in the U-12 Boys Division 3 Plate final when Ballybunio­n Wildcats defeated St Colemans 40-17. The game was tight early on but by half time the Wildcats had opened a significan­t gap 29-14 and with their defence on top there was no way back for the Saints.

ANOTHER DOUBLE AS WILDCATS TAKE U-12 GIRLS PLATE

THE Girls Division 3 Plate is also in the Ballybunio­n Wildcats trophy cabinet as the defeated St Colmans 28-19. This game took a while to ignite with the Wildcats up 4-0 and 10-6 after two quarter. Ballybunio­n pulled away and were 20-8 up at the break and despite a St Colman’s fight back that had the gap down to 7 the Wildcats held on for the win.

ANNES BEAT BRENDANS IN ALL SAINTS U-11 BATTLE

THE U-11 Girls Division 1 decider saw St Annes defeat St Brendan’s 32-21. St Brendan’s got the better start and led 9-6 but by the half St Annes had taken over to lead 18-11. The final two quarters were tight but that gap establishe­d in the second quarter means St Anne’s are the champions.

RAVENS FLY HIGH WITH LATE WINNER IN U-16 GIRLS

ONE of the games of the weekend was the-U-16 Girls final. There was nothing between TK Vixens and Rathmore Ravens for most of the game. Vixens were 3 up at the break 23-20. The sides were level with seconds to play but a late Ravens basket gave them the win.

CAHERCIVEE­N OPENS DAY WITH TWO WINS

A great opening to day 2 saw Cahercivee­n take two wins. First up they defeated Kenmare Kestrels 55-48 in the U-16 Boys Division 2 final. The South Kerry side were 14-11 up at the end of the first and 31-23 at the half. Kenmare closed the gap to three 42-39 with one quarter to play but the South Kerry side held on.

They followed this up by taking the Girls

U-14 Plate in a 46-25 win over St Annes. Cahercivee­n built up a big first quarter lead and despite a St Annes fight back it was 24-10 at the half. A 36-15 lead at the gap was too much for St Annes to pull back and another trophy was heading for South Kerry.

BOBCATS BEAT BRIDGET’S IN U-14 BOYS PLATE

THE U-14 Boys Division 2 Plate went to TK Bobcats as they defeated St Bridget’s 40-32 having been 28-18 up at the break. They were 8 up going into the final quarter which was a tie.

JOSEPH’S BEAT BRENDAN’S IN U-12 GIRLS PLATE

A good start by St Joseph’s set them up for this win 35-19. They led all the way 15-7, 28-9 and 34-15.

ST JOSEPH’S MAKE IT TWO WINS FROM TWO IN U-12 BOYS

A very good display from St Joseph’s U-12 boys saw then defeat a KCYMS side 33-24 that never gave up.

COUGARS ROAR TO U-11 WIN

THE second last game of the weekend saw one of the biggest crowds cheer on

TK Cougars defeat St Colmans 30-13.

BOBCATS END WEEKEND WITH ANOTHER WIN

THE weekend of action ended with TK Bobcats defeating St Bridget’s 39-33 in the U-16 Girls Division 2 Plate decider.

SENIOR CUPS ON SUNDAY

FOLLOWING two weekends of underage action the spotlight turns to seniors this Sunday in the Complex with the men’s and ladies Cups.

The action gets underway at 12 noon with the Ladies Division 2 decider between St Bridget’s and St Paul’s. This is followed by the Division 1 Ladies final with St Joseph’s taking on Glenbeigh Flacons at 1.30.

The Division 3 Ladies final tip’s off at 3pm and here it’s Horan’s Health Stores up against TK Vixens.

It is men’s games for the rest of the afternoon. At 4.30 the Division 2 men’s final has St Brendan’s playing Cahercivee­n. This is followed at 6pm by the Division 1 Men’s decider in the all Saints clash of Mary’s and Brendan’s.

The day’s action ends with the Division 2 Men’s Shield where St Anne’s face St Joseph’s from 7.30pm.
