WOMEN 2000

Woman 2000 meets in Sean Scoil, Sun Hill, Killorglin, every Wednesday morning from 10.30am to 12.30pm. We are a women’s social group, enjoying a wide range of activities. New members are always welcome.

Our Annual AGM will take place on Wednesday 26th February. This is your chance to have a say in the running of the group so we hope that as many members as possible will attend. We would encourage all members, new and old, to consider becoming involved as a committee member or officer.

This is an important time for Woman 2000 as we are now approaching our 20th anniversary. As part of our celebrations, we will be having a special extended meeting on Wednesday 4th March. More details next week but be sure to ‘save the day’.

We also have a very special event on Friday 6th March in Killorglin CYMS Hall, when we are pleased to welcome Joan Cashman for an interactive and fun evening of Image and Style. Joan is the inspiration behind the company, Colour and Image Academy, a unique centre that specialises in all aspects of makeup and image consultancy training, and is a hugely popular speaker. The event will commence at 7.30pm with a finger food reception before Joan’s show starts at 8.00pm. Tickets are available for €10, which covers not only the food and Joan’s presentation but also a door raffle for a makeover session with Joan worth €150. Phone 066 9796497 or 087 9020843 to book.

This is an open event so do encourage friends and family to come along. Profits from the event will be donated to Adapt Women’s Refuge in Tralee so this is a great opportunity to do good and have fun at the same time. We are grateful to South Kerry Development Partnership for their support in the organisation of this event.

CALL FOR PUBLIC LIGHTING ADJACENT TO BALLYKISSANE ROAD

Councillor Michael Cahill has called on Kerry County Council to provide Public Lighting adjacent to the Ballykissane road, Killorglin. Speaking at a recent meeting of the Council, the Rossbeigh Councillor requested the Local Authority to take into consideration the fact that the Ballykissane road is a very busy road for vehicles, walkers and cyclists, the fact that St.Joseph’s Nursing Home, several Housing Estates, numerous individual houses, along with Ballykissane Pier and Monument are all located adjacent to this road.

The Fianna Fail Councillor who has requested the extension of the Public Lighting from Killorglin town out as far as the Ballykissane, Ballymacprior and Reen Junction on a number of occasions over the years said "This is now a major "Health and Safety" issue for all road users and needs to be addressed as a matter of priority."

Reply: This road was previously investigated and the locations where it was feasible to provide public lighting have since been completed, which was in the vicinity of the entrance to the nursing home. There are very significant constraints on the provision of public lighting for the remaining section of road as there is a High Voltage ESB Networks line running parallel to the carriageway on the western side. Any public lighting columns placed on this particular section of road would be within the safety exclusion zone associated with this power line and this is prohibited by the ESB Networks Safety Rules. The High Voltage ESB line would need to be relocated or undergrounded and the cost of this work is beyond the scope of the Councillor Specific Municipal District Operations fund which is the only source of funding potentially available to meet the cost of provision of public lighting at this location.

Following Councillor Cahill’s Motion, it was agreed to write to the ESB and ask them to consider relocating or undergrounding the High Voltage Line at Ballykissane.
