The Kerryman (South Kerry Edition)
THE SHOW GOES ON AT DRIVE-IN
AS we all know, COVID-19 has wreaked havoc on the events’ schedule all over the county and country, as keeping away from each other has become the new normal.
So it’s great to see a bit of ingenuity bringing large crowds together for enjoyable events – albeit in a safe way.
The INEC Arena car-park was the venue as Retro Drive-In Movies came to Killarney for the first time, putting on 14 films at the site from Friday through to Monday.
There was a limit of 100 on the number of cars left in, and all cars were to keep suitably apart. Ticket entries were scanned through car windows, and stewards made sure people stayed in their cars as the movies were ongoing.
All very safe, and very popular as it happens. The movie extravaganza will return from Friday, Managing Director Ryan O’Neill explained to The Kerryman, with another eight films lined up from Friday to Sunday.
“Sales were fantastic for the weekend,” Ryan said. “A bit slower for the Monday, but you’d expect that, and we’re back again on Friday, with films at 6pm and 9pm.
“On Saturday and Sunday, the line-up will see films shown at 3pm, 6pm, and 9pm, and people can book their tickets and see the schedule at www.retrodrivein.ie/killarney.”
The Leopardstown-based company has become best known for running the service at that area’s racecourse for the past four years, but it is branching out more and more as time goes on.
This was their first time in Killarney, after the INEC showed interest and got in touch with the organisers, and they won’t have long to wait for their second visit.
“It went really well, and we’re looking forward to being back at the weekend,” Ryan said.
