The fall-out from COVID-19 was again the big talking point on the Twitter machine this week, with the focus turning to Premier League club’s decisions to furlough their staff. Liverpool’s decision – later reversed – came in for the most criticism...
Jamie Carragher
Jurgen Klopp showed compassion for all at the start of this pandemic, senior players heavily involved in @premierleague players taking wage cuts. Then all that respect & goodwill is lost, poor this @LFC
Miguel Delaney @MiguelDelaney
Clubs like Liverpool may be
technically/legally eligible for furlough (although there is possibility govt frowns on businesses using it for cost-saving), but there is a difference between that and moral eligibility - esp when you so talk about your values/social responsibility
Jonathan Northcroft @JNorthcroft
What happened to “this means more?” By taking taxpayers’ money to furlough staff, Liverpool have acted just like any other profits-first business. Dispiriting stuff.
Henry Winter @henrywinter
Fair play to #lfc for rethinking
furlough decision. “We believe we came to the wrong conclusion last week to announce that we intended to apply to the Coronavirus Retention Scheme and furlough staff ... and are truly sorry for that,” ceo Peter Moore
Stan Collymore @StanCollymore
Well done to the @ManUtd board and ownership for continuing to pay all staff through this period, playing or non playing or matchday staff for remaining scheduled games. This is how comprehensive and straightforward every Premier League club should have acted from day one.
Didi Hamann @DietmarHamann
Astonished by the news that @ lfc takes advantage of the furlough scheme to claim 80 % of non playing staffs wages back of the government. That’s not what the scheme was designed for. Contrary to the morals and values of the club i got to know
Daniel Storey @danielstorey85
For all the deserved censure of clubs that have used the Government’s furlough scheme, Manchester United’s response has been absolutely brilliant. Shambolic in plenty they do, but have got all of this right.
Gary Lineker @GaryLineker
Good to see that some of our biggest football clubs are supporting their non playing staff. It’s an important moment for our game. People, and fans in particular, will remember those that stand up and do what’s right in these extraordinarily testing times.
Gary Neville @GNev2
