The Kerryman (South Kerry Edition)

QUICK FIRE

What would be your first football memory?

My first football memory? My father would have been very involved in South Kerry and going to games with him, he was a lunatic football suppor ter, so going to games. There was three sisters older than me but I was in the car going to games with him all the time.

Favourite player of all time?

I suppose I was frightfully for tunate when you think of where I came from. Obviously Jacko [O’Shea] and then as I was playing myself, Maurice [Fitzgerald]. We all grew up looking up to Jacko and he was an unbelievable servant to both the Marys and South Kerry. It’s amazing even now the way people live in the moment today, whereas when you think Jacko won four Texaco All Star awards. You talk about players today, but there’s nobody coming near that. But subsequently Maurice obviously was a fantastic player for the Marys and the district and for Kerry.

Do you have an interest in other sports? What other sports do you watch on TV?

Basketball. I’d have an interest in soccer, but I’d have more of an interest in basketball. I sponsor the local team here in Killorglin in the Superleague and they’re doing very well so I’d be at every home game I possibly can. I played a nice bit of basketball when I was in school and I’d have an interest in it. The NBA probably is irrelevant to me now at this stage, because it’s on too late at night.

Any sporting event you’d particularly like to go to?

I’ve been to a Superbowl and I’ve been to a few Champions League finals, so I’ve ticked a few boxes already.

Are you a United man?

I am, I am... Are they turning the corner?

TV and movies and that sort of thing are you interested in that?

Yeah I’d go to the cinema. Myself and Siobhan [his wife] we’d head to the cinema regularly. The lads at home have Netflix so I fall into somethings with them now and again.
