COVID-19

Lyreacrompane is playing its part in the battle to defeat Covid 19. The area is quite but people are getting on with life as best and as safely as they can in the lockdown. Some of us are enjoying or putting up with ‘cocooning’. People have more time to be extra neighbourly -- but at a distance.

If the 23rd Dan Paddy Andy Festival goes ahead on the August Bank Holiday Weekend won’t it be one of the signals that our world is returning to normal.

It will be lovely to meet up again in the Marquee, on the Bog Walk or at the 5K/10K Walk/Run for a worthy charity. And don’t forget the Waltzing Competition. Just to let you know that the entertainers waiting for the flag to drop this year are Eddie Lee, Pat McKenna from Derry, Bernie Heaney from Kildare, Mike Condon, Stevie Donegan, a couple of Irish Rambling House entertainers and, of course, Mike Fitzgerald and his band Southern Pride.

Paudie McAuliffe, of ‘When the Robins Come Home’ fame, joins us for the first time. A decision will be made on the festival at a later date and in line with government recommendations on such events. In the meantime, we send our best to Eddie Lee who is recovering following a short spell in hospital.

Just to note in passing that the Dan Paddy Andy Festival Song, sung by Mike Fitzgerald, has passed the one hundred thousand hits mark on You Tube!!!

The Irish Rambling House Show, which was to take place in Killorglin at the end of this month under the auspices of Radio Kerry, has been postponed. The show is organised from Lyreacrompane and we hope to announce a new date later in the year.

It is proposed to publish an edition of the Lyreacrompane and District Journal at the end of this year. Writing an article or searching out some old photos for the Journal would be a nice way to fill in some time while we are confined to barracks. Future generations might like to read about how you ‘cocooned’. We are also asking people to consider writing an article entitled the ‘Road to School’.

In your mind’s eye make that trip once again and tell of the houses you passed, who lived there, what they worked at, were any of them born outside Lyre and what their children went on to do, i.e. immigrate or stay at home etc, and so on. Since we all have been advised to stay at home, more and more people are tuning into the popular Community Internet Radio Station, Irish Country Music Radio.

In some houses it provides the background music for much of the day. Joe Harrington broadcasts directly from Lyreacrompane every Tuesday and Saturday night from 9pm to 11pm. The name of his long running programme is ‘Joe’s Country Kingdom’. The show has listeners all over Ireland and the world so you can send best wishes and request a song for relatives and exiles anywhere.

We are living through strange times; times that are testing us. It will probably lead to some reassessment of the way we live our lives. We have time to think about the things that mean most to us. The world may discover a new level of neighbourliness such as presently exists in places like Lyreacrompane. More people may see the value of getting involved in community activity. The pandemic is terrible but out of the ashes may come the beginnings of a more human world. Stay safe, stay apart, stay at home, look after each other as we look forward with confidence to a better and brighter world.
