Killarney people asked to shop local as recovery begins

- By TADHG EVANS

AS restrictions continue to ease around Killarney as they do everywhere else, businesses in the town have encourage locals to support their town by shopping in Killarney, wherever possible.

As a tourism-centred town, Killarney was hit more severely by the lock-down than most others, but the town’s businesses are hopeful that the community around them will reward them for having adhered stringently to government and public-health guidance.

Now these same businesses will depend on shoppers to help them re-group and hit back after a terribly difficult year to date, with a large number of businesses re-opening under Phase Two of the government roll-back on restrictions.

To boost this, Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce has initiated a Shop Local Campaign, complete with the message that ‘We’re in this together’.

“During lockdown, we assured the people that we were with them every step of the way and that anything that could be done to assist them would be done,” Chamber President Paul Sherry (pictured above) explained.

“Our message now is that we are getting through this together and, with everybody’s support, there will be better days ahead in this wonderful town. The shops, the restaurants, the hotels, the pubs and everybody in business in Killarney are creating jobs and ensuring families are looked after.

“Online shopping played a part during the COVID lockdown, but our appeal now is for people to think local and to shop local as we will all get through this together.”
