Green light for Adare Manor’s plan after Department planning u-turn
A u-turn by Government heritage officials has paved the way for Adare Manor and Golf Resort to proceed with its expansion plans.
Last month, plans by the resort – which is slated to host the 2026 Ryder Cup – to construct a new 40-space car park were put on hold after the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht lodged an appeal with An Bord Pleanála.
The department cited concerns over the impact of the development on the historic town’s ‘defences’ and in particular a medieval wall. The department has now withdrawn the appeal.
A spokeswoman at the department said it had withdrawn the appeal after receiving ‘binding undertakings from the developer’.
“The department lodged the appeal as a result of planning permission having been granted that did not include appropriate provision to ensure the protection of any remains of the town defences of Adare which may still be on the development site,” she said.
“Having received binding undertakings from the developer that, in the event of any such remains being found in the course of pre-construction archaeological test excavation, they will be preserved, the department was satisfied that the appeal was no longer warranted.
The Adare hotel company, Tizzard Holdings, had lodged an archaeological assessment with the plans, which concluded that it was unlikely that the development would impact on any identified archaeological monuments.
