No harm in asking - Cllr Callaghan extends Killarney invite to Garth Brooks

- BY FERGUS DENNEHY

WE’RE all familiar with the phrase ‘a dumb priest never got a parish’ and it’s this thinking here that is the main message behind Cllr Niall O’Callaghan’s latest idea: inviting the one and only Garth Brooks to play in Killarney.

And while it may sound a little bizarre, Cllr O’Callaghan said that he was serious when he sent out his tweet late on Monday night in which he asked someone to get onto Peter Aiken about getting Garth Brooks down to Kerry to play in Fitzgerald Stadium.

He had been watching the hugely popular about Garth Brooks documentary on Netflix when he came across a scene where Garth Brooks and his mother are sitting together when suddenly she starts to sing about Killarney before the singer joins in with her.

“You’re sitting there watching this programme that millions of people around the world are watching and he starts singing about Killarney,” he said to The Kerryman on Tuesday.

“It’s worth just throwing out there saying ‘listen, we’d love to have you down in Killarney’. Just picture Fitzgerald

Stadium hosting it and sure you’d have 40 to 45,000 people a night there. You’d easily get a week out of it,” he said.

“There’s no harm in asking sure. Stranger things than this have happened and sure Peter Aiken himself is a big fan of Killarney. He’s been coming down here for years with his family on holiday every summer,” Niall continued.

And while he’s aware that it’s a longshot, he said that it would be fantastic for the town to have that level of business coming back into the town and in the meantime, anyone who’s got a direct line to Peter Aiken, send him onto Niall and let’s get the ball rolling.
