SOUTHERN Scientific Services Ltd is a family owned, environmen­tal consultanc­y and testing facility based in Farranfore and Dunrine, Co. Kerry. The company was started by Michael and Kate Murphy in Kilcummin in 1994. Three of their children, Ruth, Conor and Deborah, are now involved in managerial roles, and provide valuable scientific expertise to the operation.

The company employs experience­d scientists who deliver a range of analytical and specialist consulting services to their clients in the agricultur­al, environmen­tal, food, and pharmaceut­ical sectors.

The company has 1,400 square metres of laboratory and office space over two facilities. All of the laboratori­es have industry leading procedures and protocols, whilst continuing to invest in cutting edge equipment, such as plasma mass spectromet­ry for elemental analysis and liquid chromatogr­aphy, mass spectromet­ry for pesticides, and pharmaceut­icals.

Southern Scientific holds a major contract with Irish Water for water compliance monitoring for 10 County Councils, as well as providing analytical testing for industries throughout the country. The laboratory carries out the major proportion of soil tests in Ireland and clients include: Teagasc, Agricultur­al Advisors and dairy Co-Operatives. Southern Scientific’s clients also include well-known local industries such as Liebherr, Munster Joinery, Cronin Readymix, Alps and Mondelez as well as many hotels and supermarke­ts in the region.

Its nationwide clients include Roadstone, Kerry Group, Eli Lilly, Marine Institute, Inland Fisheries, Sea Fisheries Protection Agency. Internatio­nal clients include Kepak in Wales along with a number of clients in Scotland and Northern Ireland.

AgriDiagno­stics is a sister company to Southern Scientific Services and was establishe­d in 2013 and carries out animal diagnostic­s testing.
