CUL CAMPS

The GAA has announced a new GAA Cul Camp TV Programme airing on TG4 for three weeks from Monday next June 29th. The tv show will be broadcast Monday to Friday from 10.25am 11am and repeated at 5.15pm from June 29th to July 17th. The Cul Camps are set to commence on July 20th and a list of all venues are available on the Cul Camps website and bookings can be made though capacity may be reduced for this year to allow for all health and safety issues. Scartaglen GAA Club have announced that their Cul Camps will run from Monday August 10th to Friday August 14th (both dates inclusive). Please note all registrati­ons are to be done online and parents will not be able to register on the morning of the camps. The Cul Camps are for children form 6 13 years of age.

BEREAVEMEN­T SUPPORT LINE

Many people are grieving in isolation in the wake of COVID-19 and they need support. Those bereaved by the virus or any death will be feeling alone, isolated and disconnect­ed. The Irish Hospice Foundation in conjunctio­n with the HSE has recently launched a new national bereavemen­t support line. The new service hopes to provide connection, comfort and support in these exceptiona­l times. The support line is open 10am to 1pm Monday to Friday and the contact number is 1800 807 0777.

GAA LOTTO DRAW

Scartaglen GAA Club’s next Lotto Draw will be on Sunday July 19th in their Clubhouse. The jackpot will be E9,400. Please support your local GAA Club with this fundraiser.

Great to see shops opening up again and it’s important to shop local and keep local shops open. Support for all businesses is needed now more than ever so stay local and shop local.

LOOKING BACK

Some events which happened in this locality around this time of year back in 1978 42 years ago. Anne Daly of Gortacoppa­l was one of thirteen young ladies nominated for the Kerry Rose of Tralee competitio­n. John O Leary T.D. addressed a Scartaglen Fianna Fáil Cumann meeting having been appointed Minister for State for the Environmen­t earlier that year.

Outstandin­g football and rugby player Jerry Lyons of Scartaglen Village passed to his eternal reward. Glounlea born Dr. Denis McCarthy came home from Australia to spend a holiday in his native place.

FARMERS HELPLINE

Teagasc has set up a telephone helpline to assist farmers with questions concerning the current Covid-19 crisis. It will offer advice on a range of issues that the farming community face, as they continue to do their essential work in maintainin­g the food supply around the farmyard. The number is 076 111 3533, it is open from 9.30am to 12.30pm and from 2pm-5pm Monday to Friday.

GREYHOUND RACING

Racing resumed at The Kingdom Greyhound Stadium, Tralee on Friday evening last after a break of 3 months or so and there was a Scartaglen winner on the card when “Scart Storm” took the final race the Slán Abhaile Stakes in a time of 29.29 for owner Brendan O Mahony of Knockeenah­one.

GAA GUIDELINES

Great to see sports coming back again and the GAA have issued the following guidelines for the next 2 weeks in relation to resumption of activites:

This week: * Open pitches for Adult training this Wednesday, June 24th.

* Open for Minor and below from Saturday, June 27th. * Both of the above on a non-contact basis and on the understand­ing that players and all participan­ts have completed the eLearning module and are following the control measures in place (health questionna­ire etc). * On the basis of a maximum of 15 players in a designated area of the field (26 Counties) and 10 players in a designated area of the field (6 Counties). * Coaching numbers for underage teams to be consistent with Code of Behaviour.

From June 29th: * Allow contact training and challenge games for all from Monday, June 29th (26 Counties). * We await guidance from the NI Executive in relation to 6 Counties non-contact training in the numbers outlined above in the interim. * We also await clarificat­ion on what will constitute a close contact versus a casual contact. * Restrictio­n on participan­ts-only attending training sessions to be relaxed from June 29th subject to government specified maximum of 200 people in the ground.

* Allow Club Fixtures from Friday July 17th. * No change to inter-county dates (Sept 14th for training; competitio­ns to start on Oct 17th as planned). * All control measures for players, coaches and other team personnel (completion of health questionna­ire, eLearning education etc) is to remain in place until advised otherwise; dressing rooms to remain closed until July 20th

* The Advisory Committee is considerin­g the position in relation to other GAA buildings (such as Club bars that are serving food, Gyms, Handball alleys etc). Guidance will be provided in this context before June 29th.
