Forget brain freeze for Laune Rangers’ ice-cream challenge!

- By SINEAD KELLEHER

IN recent years it was the ice-bucket challenge, now it’s the ice-cream challenge, and already the unique fundraiser is gaining traction online.

Launched by Laune Rangers GAA club, the fundraiser asks the public to demolish their favourite ice-cream in 30 seconds or less and post their video online with the hash-tag #icecreamchallenge.

Leading the way is comedian Bernard Casey, who took part and is urging others to support the event, which has been launched to help local charities suffering from loss of funding due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

His side-splitting video has kick-started the campaign, and it is hoped that others will now follow and take part in the challenge.

“We took the idea from the ice-bucket challenge and called it the ice-cream challenge,” explains club PRO Aidan Clifford

“You have to record yourself eating your ice-cream, post it on social media, donate to the GoFundMe page and nominate three friends to do the same,” he explained.

The three charities to benefit from the challenge are St Francis’ Special School, Beaufort; Down Syndrome Ireland; and the Irish Pilgrimage Trust, all of which are important to the county and support many families in Kerry.

“Charities are struggling at the moment, so we wanted to do something to help and to support local charities as well.”

To date, Laune Rangers have raised almost €1,000 for the three charities, and they are hoping the challenge will grow bigger in the coming weeks as more and more people undertake the task and help three very worthy causes.

Details can be found online on the Laune Rangers Facebook page, as well as on some of the videos already produced, and the club is now urging as many people as possible to play their part in this fun and worthy summer challenge.
