FAIRY WORLD VANDALISED

- By SINEAD KELLEHER

“HEART-BREAKING and very disappointing” is how Glenbeigh Community Council and Tidy Towns Chairperson Geraldine Murphy has described the damage caused to the hugely popular Fairy Forest in Glenbeigh.

Perspex windows and doors were torn off the hand-crafted fairy houses, and the slate roofs were also damaged in the attack on the wonderful family attraction.

Some of the fairytale characters were also destroyed and stolen, including Snow White and six dwarves.

In total, 15 of the 30 fairy houses which line the fairy trail were damaged by vandals in the attack, which is believed to have occurred in the past week. Volunteers discovered the damage last week when they were undertaking maintenance on the Fairy Forest.

Some of the houses were so badly damaged they have to be completely removed and replaced, and Glenbeigh Community Council is seeking donations to be dropped to the Community Centre to help rebuild the attraction after the shocking incident.

“It is heart-breaking. Whoever did it had to go to huge effort to break the doors and pull out the windows. There was a fairy around 12 inches high, and they broke the body. They even damaged the sign by rocking it backwards and forwards to break it and hitting it with what looks like a hammer.”

In monetary value the damage is small, but all of the houses are hand-crafted and are painted and roofed with slate, all of which requires time, effort and funding.
