The Kerryman (South Kerry Edition)
Title win is ‘Holy Grail’ for Kerry’s Liverpool supporters
AS you can see from the sea of red that we’ve gathered here, Liverpool’s first Premier League win has gone down a treat with the Kerry-based supporter contingent after Man City were beaten by Chelsea, making it impossible for any team to catch Liverpool.
Indeed, Declan Carty – Secretary of the Liverpool Supporter’s Club in Listowel – said the league title, the club’s first top flight title in 30 years, was quite simply the “holy grail”.
In existence for 25 years, the Official Liverpool FC Supporter’s Club Listowel boasts over 100 members and, speaking to The Kerryman this week, Declan said that although they weren’t able to celebrate together, every single member let their voices be heard in the group chat.
“There were messages flying in left, right and centre come the final whistle at the City/ Chelsea game. My phone was hopping!” he said.
“It is just massive. It’s the holy grail. I know that we’ve won a good few trophies over the last 30 years but this has been the one that everyone craved, no doubt about it,” he continued.
While the prospect of fans being allowed to return to games is still a long way off yet, Declan is hoping that with the opening of pubs this week and later in mid-July that it won’t be long until he and some of the other supporters from the club will be able to get together and watch matches and celebrate properly.
“It was strange not being able to celebrate together but, hopefully, if things continue to ease in the next few weeks, we’ll be able to have a proper celebration together,” he continued.
