Town falls down over litter problem - report

-

SLIGO’S litter problem was the only area where the town came in for negative comments in the competition.

“Unfortunately litter was all too prevalent on the day. Cigarette butts were far too numerous to be overlooked,” remarked the judges.

Informal signage on our approach roads was raised as an issue the town “will have to address” with “old tape and cable ties on poles too frequent as well.”

The judges said “looking up at the first floor of shopfront shows too many old lights no longer in use, cables and other clutter.”

The mosaic seat by the river on JFK Parade was described as “far too dirty to be tolerated.”

The National Tidy Town judges also pointed to “a dearth of places to sit in some areas.” They also said traffic remains “quite an issue for your town core.”

Service stations and fast- food outlets on the N15 Bundoran Road were praised for their cleanliness and neatness.

Commenting on the 2015 results, the Chairperson of Sligo Tidy Towns Jim Lawlor said: “It’s another solid result for Sligo Tidy towns. We’ve risen 39 marks in the last four years. Everybody is moving in the right direction,” he said.

“However, there is still much more work to do. We are still some 13 marks off a bronze medal in our category. We look to forward to studying the adjudicator’s report in detail, which will help us shape our plans for 2016.”

The 2015 National Tidy Towns Competition attracted a record 862 entries. 23 towns and villages from across County Sligo took part this year including Aclare, Coney Island and Mullaghmore. Letterkenny from County Donegal was named Ireland’s Tidiest Town for 2015. It received 323 marks out of a possible 450.

Sligo Tidy Towns will host a special Thank You evening for all its volunteers, friends and supporters on Thursday, October 8th in the Sligo Park Hotel at 8pm.
