- By PAUL KEEGAN

THERE was a real commotion around Sligo last week as the junior Certificate and leaving certificate examinations came to an end.

Students all over Ireland finally reached the conclusion of the state exams. The excitement was clear to see around Summerhill College Sligo as the gruelling exam period came to an end for the junior cert students, following their metalwork exam.

“Everything I wanted to come up, came up – it was easier than previous exam papers,” said a satisfied Ciaran Cassidy following the exam. Generally happy with the exams Rory McVeigh laughed about how much writing he had to do in some of them: “All went well, but the English and Religion exams were tough on the hands!”

Andrew Jackson who’s heading off to France to recuperate following his exams thought they went well: “They went grand… better than expected to be honest!”

Happy with how the exams went and happy that they’re finished, Owen Eglinton reflected on how they went. “The hardest was probably Irish Paper 2, but the rest went well. ”

Ryan Davey was cautiously optimistic about his results: “The exams seemed to go alright. The Paper 1’ s were nice… I suppose we’ll see in September!”

Peter Connolly and Oisin Mullen were happy with their Metalwork exam. Peter said: “The exam itself wasn’t too tricky. Much of the harder work had been done completing the project over the last 5 months.” Oisin was satisfied with the paper saying ‘ it was generally easy, fairly similar to the Mock Paper.’

Over at the Ursuline College, there were similar scenes of jubilation as the Leaving Cert chemistry exam brought to a close the exam period - and also their time in secondary school - for many of the girls. Anxiously waiting outside the exam hall was Chemistry teacher Colm McIntyre, who was delighted to see all of the students staying in the exam for the three hours.

Maria Walsh said: “It went better than expected. They were manageable!”

Maria Connolly and Síofra Kilgannon completed the leaving cert with the chemistry exam. They said: “We are looking forward to the celebrations now that we’re finished!”

Sarah Nicholson still had her music exam to sit but was pleased with how her chemistry test went: “I’m glad it’s over, it was a toughie,” she said.

Bronagh Hever - the head girl of her year - was delighted to have finished her exams, describing the feeling as “exhilarating”. Niamh Cassidy has plans now that her exams are complete. “I’m going to Sea Sessions. I have the tickets already bought – everybody’s going, I can’t wait!”
