The Sligo Champion

LEADING SLIGO TO VICTORY

Sligo S ladies and men defeat Leitrim, with u14s falling short

-

SLIGO took on Leitrim three times this weekend, with the senior men and intermediate ladies coming out on the top.

The U14 girls were defeated in the All Ireland C final in Boyle on Friday evening, by a strong Leitrim side who clocked up 6- 13 on the evening, more than enough to see past Sligo’s 2- 04.

Credit to the Sligo girls, though, they never gave up and continued to battle until the very end.

Things were very different for the Sligo men, however.

Meeting Leitrim in Markievicz Park in the all Connacht All Ireland Football Championship qualifier, they were more than equipped to cope with what Leitrim tried to throw their way.

Sligo dominated from the off and Niall Murphy’s five points from play in the first- half made it apparent that Leitrim were really going to struggle to contend with Sligo’s strong full- forward line.

Leading 0- 12 to 0- 04 at halftime, Sligo never took their feet off the proverbial pedals and kept up the tempo.

Kyle Cawley’s second- half goal pretty much put an end to the tie, with Darragh Cummins’ very late goal also ensuring that Sligo won by a comfortable margin of 2- 15 to 0- 10.

The Sligo ladies were also victorious in their Connacht intermediate bout against Leitrim.

Denying Leitrim a third consecutive Connacht title, Sligo were inspired by the in- form Stephanie O’Reilly who picked up a gong for ‘ Player of the Match’.

Sligo lead by 4- 04 to 2- 09 at half- time, and although Leitrim came close on numerous occasions, they ultimately were defeated 6- 12 to 3- 14 by a clinical Sligo side.
