Goals prove decisive at Molaise Gaels win U16 league final

-

THE U16 League Division 2 final took place in Markievicz Park on Monday evening last. St Farnan’s and St Molaise Gaels produced an entertaining encounter on an extremely pleasant evening.

St Molaise Gaels got off to a great start after winning the throw- in. Oisin Sheridan won the breaking ball before setting up play which resulted in the first score of the game from Colm McBrien. St Farnans then took control of the game and hit 3 unanswered points.

Shane O’Brien and Cahan Hallinan lead well from the half backline and set up some flowing moves to put St Farnans 3 points ahead.

Joe Spellman and James Her- gathy’s influence started to grow as the half progressed and this combined with good forward movement from Paul Mullarkey and Aaron Currid resulted in Gaels hitting the net on 15 minutes. St Farnans continued to keep the score board turning through points from O’Brien and the lively Thomas Cawley.

St Molaise Gaels hit another 2 goals before half time following good work from Dion McCaffrey. The half time score read St Molaise Gaels 3- 7, St Farnans 0- 8.

In the second half St Molaise Gaels backline worked tirelessly and managed to contain the strong running from Donal Hanley and Keelan Kilrehill. Oisin Brady moved forward purposefully, before finishing in the top corner. St Farnans pushed forward again but good work from Ethan Watters, Robbie Ryan and Michael Keirns in the St Molaise Gaels backline foiled more attacks. Sean O’Flynn saved well from Thomas Cawley and setup another attack where Oisin Gilmartin neatly finished to the net.

The humidity of the evening took its toll as the games slowed in the final 10 minutes. Both teams worked tirelessly throughout the match and played in a very sporting manner.

Goals proved to be decisive with a final score of St Farnans 0- 11, St Molaise Gaels 8- 14.
