DRUMCLIFFE/ ROSSES POINT

THIS is well and truly the business end of the season for our senior men’s footballers as they begin their 2016 Belfry Senior Club Championship campaign with an opening group fixture against Tubbercurry this Saturday evening in Connolly Park, Collooney, at 7: 30pm. A big show of support from the club would be appreciated for this important fixture. The seniors are in Group 1 this year along with Tubber, defending county champions St Mary’s and Coolera/ Strandhill. THE seniors warmed up for their championship opener last Sunday with an important 3- 13 to 1- 10 success over Bunninadden in Division 2 of the league. The win ensures our place in the Division 2 final with the eventual winners earning promotion to Division 1 next season. 137 participants took part in the annual GAA Kellogg’s Cúl Camp at Oxfield last week – a record for the club. Thanks to all the Sligo GAA coaches ( including a number of our own senior players) who led the week superbly. Special thanks also to our own Cúl Camp coordinator Mary Power for all her time and organisation. ANOTHER ‘ high’ for the club was recorded at Markievicz Park when the Benbulben Gaels U12 hurlers captured the A league title with a thrilling 0- 12 to 0- 11 victory over a gallant St Mary’s side. There was little to choose between either side over the four quarters and both sets of players served up a memorable contest for all who were there to see it. OUR ladies footballers are due to resume their intermediate championship campaign with a group match against St Mary’s on Sunday morning at 10am. HARD luck to the girls U16 footballers who put up a gutsy display against Shamrock Gaels in the ‘ A’ league final against Shamrock Gaels at Coola last Monday evening before eventually going down on a final scoreline of 2- 11 to 1- 7. WELL played our U12 girls who have started their championship campaign with two impressive victories to date over Calry/ St Joseph’s and Geevagh. OUR girls minor footballers begin their championship campaign this Wednesday away to St Nathy’s at 7: 30pm. THE U14 boys footballers start their championship campaign this Friday evening with a quarter- final against Curry ( away) at 7pm. THE first draw for our new Super Club Lotto will be made at the end of the week. All tickets should be returned ASAP to the Fundraising Committee. OUR Club BBQ will take place on Saturday, August 27th in Oxfield. This promises to be a fun- filled event for all the family. Keep the date free. IF you are heading off on holidays at this time of year, we want your holiday snaps! Send us a picture of you or family members in your DRP club jersey/ top and we’ll publish a selection of the best images on the club Facebook page. There’ll be ‘ brownie points’ for photos in front of tourist landmarks, either at home or abroad.

EASTERN HARPS

EASTERN Harps captured the U16 ‘ A’ League title by defeating Shamrock Gaels on a score line of 0: 10 to 0: 08. This was a very sporting game played in perfect conditions in Markievicz Park. Eastern Harps led at the break by 0: 06 to 0: 03 but this could have been a lot more only for the 2 brilliant saves by Shamrock Gaels Number 1 Ultan McKenna. Eastern Harps defence remained strong in the second half and limited Shamrock Gaels to 5 points in the second half. Eastern Harps added 4 points to the scoreboard which could have been more only for another top drawer save from Ultan McKenna. Ciaran Hannon was top scorer in this game with 4 points which meant that Eastern Harps ran out winners. I have no doubt that we will see these two teams meet again in the coming years. We wish a speedy recovery to Jake Stephenson who sustained an injury during the game. OUR senior men are out in the first round of the championship against Calry/ St. Joesph’s this Sunday at 1.30pm in Bunninadden. OUR Minors beat St. Mary’s last week and play in the ‘ A’ semi- final against St. Farnan’s in Keash this Thursday at 7pm. Our U14 boys commence their championship campaign away to Owenmore Gaels this Friday evening at 7pm. BINGO continues as usual in Gurteen Hall at 8.30pm. The jackpot on Friday is € 1,700 in 47 calls or less. The in- house lotto 1 is € 1,000 and lotto 2 is € 600. WE would like to extend our sympathy to Carina Byrne on the death of her father in Dublin.

ENNISCRONE/ KILGLASS

THERE was major disappointment for our intermediate team and management last weekend when they suffered relegation to Division Three following a five- point loss to Geevagh at Quigabar, 1- 11 to 2- 3. A very disappointing first half resulted in a five- point half- time deficit, but after the break into the wind we took control to lead by a point with 15 minutes to go. However, a costly sending off midway through the half allowed Geevagh to stretch the game and they ran out winners. The team will have to regroup quickly, with the opening round of the Intermediate Championship next Saturday evening. They play St Farnan’s at 7pm in Easkey – please support the lads. Best of luck to everyone involved. THE minor team continue training this week in preparation for championship. OUR U- 16s also continue training this week, and will play Castleconnor in the first round of the championship in a couple of weeks’ time. THE U- 14 boys had two good run outs in challenge games last week, and this week play in their first round of the championship on Friday evening. They travel to Templeboy on Friday evening for a 7pm meeting with St Farnan’s. Best of luck lads. THE U- 12 lads play their semi- final against St Patrick’s on Tuesday evening at 7pm in Dromard. Best of luck lads. CONGRATS to everyone involved in organising the Black Pig Festival last week in Enniscrone, which was a great success. We ran our own youth disco on Sunday night and it was a big hit with locals and visitors alike! Thanks to all club volunteers who helped out on the night. BLOTTO winner! CONGRATULATIONS to intermediate team footballer David Clarke on winning the blotto jackpot of € 3500 last Saturday evening. David’s winning numbers were 4, 12, 26. The draw continues every Saturday night. Your support is greatly appreciated. SYMPATHY THE club expresses its sympathies to Donal Kirby and family on the death of his brother last week. NAOMH EOIN

TOUGH luck for our U- 12 hurling team who were narrowly edged out by Benbulben Gaels in the U- 12 A1 Final in Markievicz Park last Tuesday evening. The team had an unbeaten run through the group stages to qualify for the final but were unlucky to lose out in an exciting and entertaining final by 12 scores to 11. Midfielder Robert O’Kelly- Lynch was highly impressive throughout amassing a total of ten super scores from frees and open play, and was supported ably by the likes of keeper Shea O’Neill, Adam Connolly and Brendan Munnelly in defence, midfield partner Ben O’Brien, who also struck over a fine point, and forwards Oilean Mulligan and Treasa O’Kelly- Lynch. Both teams were rarely separated by more than one point and at the end of the 2nd quarter we were 7 to 6 up. However the north Sligo amalgamation had a strong panel, and with some excellent scores from Paul O’Brien and Danny O’Connor they matched the exploits of our team and finished slightly stronger in the closing stages. Many thanks to the players and coach/ mentor Bill O’Kelly- Lynch for their hard work and efforts throughout the campaign. OUR minor hurlers suffered a narrow defeat against Tubbercurry in Round 3 of the MHC in Kent Park on Thursday. Tubbercury lead 1- 4 to 0- 4 at the break, our scores coming from Tony O’Kelly- Lynch ( 3) and Fergal O’Kelly- Lynch ( 1). In the second half, points by Niall Feehily and Tony O’Kelly- Lynch either side of a Tubbercurry goal kept us in the running. However Tubbercurry scored a further 1- 2 to establish a nine point lead with 10 minutes remaining. A point and a goal direct from a 30m free by Tony O’Kelly- Lynch reduced the deficit to five points. Inspired by Tom Gavin, Niall Campbell, Michael Kilcoyne and Niall Feehily, we kept the pressure on Tubbercurry and a second goal via Fergal O’Kelly- Lynch further reduced the margin to just two points. With the last puck of the game, Tony O’Kelly- Lynch was unfortunate to see his pile driver from a 20m free pass over the cross- bar. Final score Naomh Eoin 2- 8, Tubbercurry 3- 6. OUR u10s travelled to Easkey for a blitz on Wednesday and enjoyed a win against the home team and a draw against Coolera/ Strandhill. Dara Mostyn and Thomas Hargadon were both magnificent over the course of the two games. OUR senior team performed admirably away to Tourlestrane in our second group senior hurling championship game last Sunday evening, but despite dominating play, working hard as a team and defending solidly for long periods we were outscored by the home team 1- 16 to 0- 14. Following our impressive first championship group game, which resulted in a 4- 12 to 1- 13 win over Western Gaels, confidence was high but the first half was a close affair with Tourlestrane having the advantage at half- time 0- 9 to 0- 7. In the second half some good goal and point chances went begging and Tourlestrane finished strongly adding a goal from the impressive Eoin McDonagh. However our centre field partnership of Tony O’Kelly- Lynch and Paul Kilcoyne were excellent throughout and contributed all of our scores, with the younger of the two O’Kelly- Lynch brothers hitting over 10 points from both frees and play. Next up is a home game v Coolera/ Strandhill on the weekend of 20/ 21 August. Senior training resumes on Wednesday at 8pm in Kevinsfort with the lads aiming to prepare well for this key game that could confirm a semi- final spot with a win against our local rivals.

OWENMORE GAELS

IT is with great sorrow the club this week laid to rest Owen Sweeney, Carricknagat. Father of our chairperson, senior player and minor manager Trevor and U- 14 girl’s manager Anthony. His grandchildren Leah, Lauryn, Conor and Ryan represent the club at various levels. A well- known and popular man in the town, Owen fought a courageous battle against aggressive illness over the past few months. To his wife Patsy, children Trevor, Anthony, Damien, Jacinta, Karen, Gillian and to his numerous grandchildren and extended family the club extends our deepest sympathies. Ar Dheis de a Raibh a anam. THE senior men secured their Division two status with a 5- 8 to 0- 5 victory against Ballymote in Connolly Park on Sunday morning. The pressure was on going into the game with the lads knowing only a win and for other results to go our way would secure our status in Division two. In what was an under par performance
