ST. FARNAN’S

THE minor team have qualified for the A league semi final following defeat of Coolera/ Strandhill in the quarter final played in Scarden on Tuesday last. The final score was St. Farnan’s 1- 13, Coolera/ Strandhill 0- 7. This was a very competitive game with both sides battling hard. We had to field without the injured goalie Sean Hallinan. His brother Cahan took his place in the first half whilst David Hallinan took over in the second half. Both players performed well, keeping a clean sheet and being very effective with placed kick outs. St. Farnan’s were first on the scoreboard with a point from a free taken by Patrick O’Connor. Coolera followed with a point from a free. St. Farnan’s dominated the scoring with five points without reply and led 0- 7 to 0- 1 It was Coolera who got the next three points. At half time the score was St. Farnan’s 0- 9, Coolera 0- 5. THAT four point gap remained for much of the second half as St. Farnan’s defended very well. In the latter stages of the half Eamonn Kilgannon found the next and finished the scoring with a point. Coolera managed only two points in the half, one from a free. THE team will play away to Eastern Harps on Thursday at 7pm. THE under 16 team were defeated by a very strong St. Molaise Gaels team in the B league final played in Markievicz Park on Monday last. Despite the 8- 14 to 0- 11 scoreline the team performed well and scored some fine points. THE under 12 Easkey / St. Farnans hurlers were narrowly beaten in the B shield final on Tuesday by Tourlestrane. by 0- 10 to 0- 9 The minor hurlers meanwhile had a very comfortable win in the championship over Tourlestrane by 4- 25 to 3- 3. THE under 12 football team play away to Buninadden in the B shield semi final on Tuesday at 7 pm. The under 14’ s play Enniscrone in the first round of the B championship on Friday at 7 in Templeboy. THE intermediate team had an important win over Easkey in the league on Sunday in Easkey. The final score was Easkey 0- 10, St. Farnan’s 2- 12. This match had all the elements of a local derby and the rivalry was intense. St. Farnan’s got the first point from Tomas Ryan. Easkey added three points before the hard working Matthew Lang passed a great ball to James Hynes who finished it to the back of the net. The sides traded points for the next while before Ciaran O’Connor got our second goal. This left the score 2- 4 to 0- 6. St. Farnan’s added two points from play and Ryan Mc Kenna scored a free to leave the half time score St. Farnan’s 2- 5, Easkey 0- 7. FIVE minutes into the second half Matthew Lang had to retire due to injury. Matthew had played a pivotal role in the first half. The sides got a point a piece before Niall Crean replaced Shane Neary. St. Farnan’s lost goalie Padraic Harte to a black card. Easkey lost Haydn Gilroy to a black card with ten minutes remaining after James Hynes was fouled. St. Farnan’s dominated the latter stages of the game with two frees from Ciaran and a point from play by Niall Crean. Joe Mc Hugh got the last score of the game for Easkey from a free. THE team will play Enniscrone/ Kilglass in the first round of the intermediate championship on Saturday at 7pm in Easkey. Please support . LADIES - The Minors staged a great second half comeback to defeat Tourlestrane in their opening game of the season on Wednesday last. Trailing by ten points at the break after having been outplayed in most positions it looked like the girls would only be playing for pride in the second period but the Don McCloat and Anne Cunnane managed outfit upped their game to the point that they gradually clawed their way back to secure a victory which only thirty minutes earlier seemed almost impossible. The side’s next outing is away to St. Mary’s this Wednesday, the 27th, at 7.30. THE U- 16 team’s scheduled appearance against C. T. Gaels in the “B” League final last week fell victim to the opposition’s inability to field a team on the day. The game will now be fixed for a later date. CONGRATULATIONS to former club goalkeeper Arlene ( Tempany) Griffin and her husband John on the birth of their daughter.
