The song itself is a hugely emotional presentation bringing back tragic memories and has been penned by Belfast born singer/ songwriter Jimmy McArdle now resident in Springfield, Massachussets, USA. Jimmy is the twin brother of Mary McKeon of Knockgrania and will be travelling home from the USA to front up the launch in tandem with the musical talents of Maureen O’Dowd.

RECENT BAPTISM
Welcomed in to the Sacrament of Baptism on last Saturday was Ross Martin McKeon born April 11. Mary Gallagher is convinced she knows what is best for her family in the event of her death. Her insistence on being granted her dying wish ultimately fragments her family and results in a cataclysmic evening in a London pub where her eldest
son finally makes peace with himself and with the world. The unbridled wit of the dialogue sugars the sadness of a passing way of life.
Well known Tubbercurry actors Peter Davey and Tom Walsh feature strongly in the production and Kieran Brennan makes his Beezneez debut. Also appearing with Beezneez for the first time are Ballisodare actor Louise Maloney and Cliffoney Drama Group member, Anthony Brennan while Tubbercurry audiences will be well familiar with Michael Roper and Maurice Kehoe.
Lovely Leitrim plays in Tubbercurry on Sunday, July 31, at 8.30 p. m. Beezneez are very popular visitors to Tubbercurry and patrons will be aware that early booking is always advisable for a Beezneez show. Box office is now open at 071 9620224.
ROAD WORKS
Works have been on- going on the Ballina Road/ Charlestown Road junction in Tubbercurry over the last two months. While the Contractors did their best to minimise traffic disruption, one can only say that the situation was, to say the least ‘ challenging’ for both local and through traffic. Some days through traffic was delayed 10 minutes or more, but the workmen and contractors were always courteous.
As the work now draws to a conclusion, people are impressed by the landscaping and the new stone walls built. The real test of the project is when the new traffic lights become operational. The main right of way will NOW be given to through traffic – that is traffic travelling North – South on the back road/ circular road, while vehicles coming in the Ballina road towards town or travelling towards Charlestown from Teeling street will be faced with stopping at Red Lights. How long those delays are will be the litmus test of the project.
Many locals felt that roundabouts should have been installed rather than traffic lights, but the ‘ experts’ in the National Roads Authority made the final decision in favour of lights. Time will tell.

SUMMER SCHOOL
The organising committee of the South Sligo Summer School wish to express their gratitude to all those who helped in any way to make the 30th year of the school of traditional music, song and dance such a resounding success in Tubbercurry from July 10 to July 16 last.
This year we had an expand- ed programme of classes, workshops and other events and many, many musicians, singers, dancers and followers of the music of our region spent some of their hard earned holiday time in Tubbercurry and the surrounding area during the week. We were delighted to have the use of Tubbercurry Library this year. It proved an ideal space for the junior practice sessions. Thanks to the library staff for facilitating this. Thanks to everyone who provided venues this year – so many people remarked on the wonderful facilities and great welcome they received in Tubbercurry and the summer school could not be held without all this invaluable cooperation. It is very much appreciated.
Sincere thanks to the people of Tubbercurry who welcomed all our visitors so warmly, to the local business community for their help with stewarding, their generous financial contributions and their spirit of involvement with their lovely window displays. We also wish to thank the Sligo Tourist Office on O’Connell Street, Sligo for giving us space to put up a window display this year. Thank you to all the local musicians and to all our tutors, presenters and facilitators from near and far, with a special word of thanks to Paddy Ryan who performed the official opening and to Tubbercurry musicians James Murray and Philip Duffy for their wonderful presentation on the musicians of Tubbercurry during the week.
Thanks to all our helpers and volunteers who came on board to help ensure that the week ran smoothly and all our visitors enjoyed their time with us. Sligo County Council, the local Gardaí, local radio stations Ocean FM and Midwest Radio and local papers Sligo Champion, Sligo Weekender and Western People were all a great support this year. We are most grateful to RTÉ Raidio na Gaeltachta for providing the Ródaí for two days during the summer school this year. Four hours live broadcasting from the Square in Tubbercurry was one of the highlights of the week for the many local and visiting musicians and singers who performed so well on live radio. Earlier in the year céilí House was broadcast from Tubbercurry and there was a great representation of local musicians and summer school tutors for that programme also.
This year all the talks, recitals and concerts were recorded by ITMA ( Irish Traditional Music Archive) and we are most grateful to them for this important involvement.
During the week of the summer school, Tubbercurry Chamber of Commerce President Louise Kilbane unveiled a plaque on the Square to commemorate the founding of the South Sligo Summer School in 1987. Three of the four founding members were present and are still very much to the fore in the running of the school 30 years later, Rita Flannery, Michael Severs and Marie Flannery. Sadly, the fourth founding member, Geraldine Murtagh, passed away in August 2014 and our thoughts are with her husband Jack and family at this time of year especially.
It only remains to mark your diaries for the 31st Year: July 9 to July 15, 2017. And if you are travelling at home or abroad during the coming months be sure to bring some of the South Sligo Summer School brochures with you, available for any member of the organising committee. Go mbeirimid beo ag an am seo arís.
